On the road, the LW300 gives a good ride on all but the most uneven pavement, and it's sure-footed on winding roads. Ride and handling were never an issue with the L-Series. Standard equipment includes traction control, antilock brakes, side airbags and OnStar, the satellite-linked communications system.

"Upscale" and "more personality" were words liberally sprinkled throughout Saturn execs' presentations at the 2003 L-Series unveiling in Pontiac, Michigan. The brag on the fresh-look midsizers was such that one might think the '03 sedan and wagon were totally new, and not merely midcycle enhancements.

Don't be surprised if youngsters are eager to get into the back seat of the 2003 Saturn L-Series cars. They're bound to be attracted to the optional, factory-installed, DVD entertainment center offered by Saturn on both L-Series sedans and station wagons.

For the 2003 model year, L-Series models receive new exterior styling and some new interior features and options, but some features have been discontinued. For example, rear disc brakes have been replaced with drums on L200 and LW200 models, and anti-lock brakes, which were standard, are now optional on all models. As well, the least-expensive L100 model has been discontinued.

"This is a Saturn?!?" the fellow asked as he walked around the LW300 I was testing. LW300 is new Saturn-speak for the L-series midsize wagon with a 3.0-liter V-6. "Gosh," he continued. "I thought it was a Volvo or something. This is niiiiiccce."
