Automotive News reports that Saturn is considering building a Red Line version of its upcoming AURA midsize car – compete with at least a 300 horsepower powerplant.

General Motors on Friday showed off the Saturn Aura concept car at its Fairfax plant, where its final version will be built beginning in 2006. The sleekly designed, midsize sedan is adorned with many European features, a vast departure from more utilitarian current and past Saturn models.

The AURA is part of a new strategy designed to broaden the brand's appeal by offering sleek, sophisticated, European-styled models with Japanese-like quality.

BusinessWeek named Saturn's new AURA sedan the "Best Production Car $21,000 to $25,000" on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

At Saturn, more than 60% of its sales are to women. That's why their concept car, the Saturn Aura, has been designed with woman in mind.

In its design, the Aura is quite similar to Pontiacs bold G6. The cars share a long wheelbase which is an integral part of the cab-forward design, to maximize interior space. The similarities continue with short overhangs and an identical roofline integrating a four-panel sliding glass panoramic sunroof that melds into a high trunk.

The current Saturn product line is not made up of the clever vehicles that once defined the hip young brand. They are instead dull, awkward blobs of plastic. But Saturn is now ready to win back a customer base with wonderfully Opel-like cars such as the Sky sports car and this beautiful sedan called the Aura. Jill Lajdziak calls this a "sneak peek at a new generation of emotionally compelling Saturn vehicles," and we hope that claim lives to be true.

Aura, which debuts at the NAIAS alongside the Saturn '07 Sky roadster, provides clues to the all-new midsize sedan – based on GM's Epsilon architecture – the auto maker plans to begin selling in 2006.
