Second Plan Uncovered as Retailers Weigh Ideas to Preserve Saturn (Visit this link)

Jack Katzanek from the Press-Enterprise: At least two lifelines have been extended to troubled General Motors Corp. brand Saturn, but anyone who steps forward with a rescue deal faces a difficult task, an industry analyst said. Last week, an Oklahoma-based private equity group, Black Oak Partners, said it was working with an undisclosed number of Saturn retailers on a possible deal to buy the car company's distribution network from GM. A second plan involving Saturn dealers is also in the works, one that would likely involve finding someone who would assemble parts into finished vehicles, said an Inland Southern California retailer who is one of the dealers exploring this idea. The question is, who manufacturers the product? Krebs said having one company make the vehicles and another distribute them is a new and unproven idea. Also, one of the possible plans, she said, would be to have Saturns made by Chinese or Indian manufacturers, an idea that's never been tried in America. "There's a risk there, too," said Michelle Krebs, Detroit editor for AutoObserver an online newsletter operated by Edmunds.com. "China and India are not at the United States' level. U.S. perception of those cars is a long way off."
