The U.S. auto industry shattered its all-time monthly sales record in October as buyers ignored the faltering economy and swarmed showrooms to take advantage of no-interest finance deals. America's consumers bought nearly 1.73 million cars and trucks last month, eclipsing the record set in September 1986, when a vehicle buying frenzy broke out before a key national tax law changed.
