About 2,400 workers at the General Motors car assembly operation in Kansas City, Kansas, learned Thursday that their assembly line will keep moving next month while 13 others across the country go idle. "A bittersweet announcement," said John Melton, bargaining chairman of the United Auto Workers Local 31. "Our people feel pretty lucky, but there are a lot of GM people who won't be working for the next several weeks. I hope we use this opportunity to make the best Buick we possibly can." That Buick is the new redesigned LaCrosse that should begin rolling off the line in mid-May, alongside the popular Chevrolet Malibu and the Saturn Aura.
