September Sales Fall as Stock of Heavily Incented 2003 Models Dwindle
SaturnFans.com • October 25, 2003

Saturn's September sales fell 7.2% to 17,109 units, down from the 18,339 cars sold during the same period last year. Year-to-date sales totaled 216,761, a 2.5% improvement over last year when retailers had sold 211,500 cars YTD.

Retailers sold 7,279 Ions last month, a 7.4% decrease from the 7,865 S-Series models sold in September 2002. A total of 89,443 Ions have been delivered to customers since the beginning of the year, which is 12% lower than last year's YTD S-Series sales. Incidentally, 71 new S-Series cars were sold last month. A monthly record of 6,550 Vues were sold in September, up 17.8% from 5,558 Vues last year. To date, 63,884 Vues have been sold this year, a 49.8% improvement over 2002 when 42,660 copies of the SUV were sold year-to-date. L-Series sales fell 34.7%: 3,209 sedans and wagons were sold this year compared to 4,916 last year. Year-to-date sales were also down 14.6% to 56,562 units from 66,211.

General Motors dealers sold 367,496 new cars and trucks in September in the United States, up 13 percent compared with September 2002. GM's overall truck sales (208,080) were up 15 percent over a year ago. Car sales (159,416) were up 10 percent from year-ago levels. Third-quarter sales were 1,297,945 units, compared to 1,270,554 units sold last year, a 2 percent improvement. "GM's sales in September were solid and contributed to a 2 percent improvement in the third quarter over the prior year," said John Smith, group vice president of GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "This increase was the result of GM shattering the prior industry sales record for trucks along with continued strong demand for other key vehicles such as the Chevrolet Impala, Cadillac CTS and Escalade, Saab 9-3, Pontiac Vibe, GMC Envoy, and Saturn Vue."
