End of an Era SaturnFans.com August 28, 2002 Its going to be an emotional week for Saturn fans, as Saturn reaches another important milestone in its relatively short history: S-Series production comes to an end. The original S-Series cars made their debut in the fall of 1990, as 1991 models. Built on the Saturn-exclusive Z-body platform, the small sedans and coupes (the SW wagon was later added to the lineup) helped quickly propel Saturn to the head of the small-car class. The S-Series cars will be replaced this fall with the all-new Ion sedan and quad coupe built off General Motors' Delta architecture. Production of the S-Series cars will reportedly end on August 29th. Saturn will close their Spring Hill plant for two weeks between September 2nd and September 13th to retool the factory for the Ion. Production of the Ion sedan is scheduled to begin in mid-September.
