Hybrid Aura Fuel Economy to Hit 35 MPG
December 26, 2006

The '07 Aura Green Line hybrid will be available this spring. More Photos.

Saturn recently posted a mini-brochure on its website touting the attributes of its upcoming hybrid midsize car: the 2007 Aura Green Line. The Aura Green Line's unique hybrid technology keeps it simple and, consequently, affordable. Using the existing testing standards (new fuel economy tests will be used beginning with 2008 model vehicles), the EPA estimates that the Aura hybrid will get up to 28 MPG city and 35 MPG highway, making you feel that much better about hitting the road.

Here's how it works:

  1. When you're at a complete stop, the 36-volt battery powers the car accessories, so the gas engine can shut off and save fuel.
  2. As soon as you lift your foot off the brake, the fuel is turned back on, and the electric motor and belt drive help the engine get off to a smooth, seamless start.
  3. When the Aura reaches a comfortable cruising speed, the power inverter/converter recharges the batteries.
  4. When you're starting and accelerating, the batteries and dual tensioner belt drive help the electric motor increase energy levels.
  5. And when you're coasting or braking, the regenerative braking system and electric motor capture your vehicle's kinetic energy and send it right back to the battery.
