Default 03 Ion won't shift Out of Park

Previous post was incorrect. When parked, the gear release button remains locked even after depressing the brake pedal. Car won't shift out of park.

You can manually bypass it by removing the cover for the shifter. Just press the switch and move the shifter...

Ok - you can do it even easier...instead of removing the whole cover to the shifter there should be a little circle fill-in (smaller than a penny) to the left of the shifter (while in Park) in that shifter cover itself. It will have a little cut out in it. Remove it and stick a long screw driver or other similar object into that hole straight down. That will engage the shift interlock system. Now you should (might) be able to shift.

Listen for it, it will click, just like a normally acting shifter does electronically. It's actually a very simple on/off device. Poke around gently and you're sure to hit it. No force at more that the weight of the object you put down there.

Take it back to Saturn asap to have whatever that controls that switch replaced/repaired.
