Default I drove a Saturn SKY !!!

My First SKY Drive.

Well – I can’t believe that I had an opportunity to drive an ’07 Saturn SKY before they hit retailers – but I was lucky enough to be invited to drive one.

Having owned competitive cars like Honda S2000s – I was truly interested in how the Saturn SKY stacked up. Especially being 6’2 and 220 pounds – I was worried if I would really fit.

After driving for over 30 minutes around town and on the highway (and yes I was comfortable) – I noticed a few things about the SKY that I absolutely love. They are:

1) Torque – something my S2000 does not have.
2) A Solid – Tight Ride. Over Michigan’s bumpy roads – this pre-production SKY was tight, tight, tight. Seriously BMW territory – this car is solid.
3) Delayed Accessory Control – when you turn off the ignition – the radio stays on!
4) Trip Computer – calculating Miles Per Gallon, Distance to Empty etc.
5) An awesome exhaust note – this is something you have to experience.
6) Stares from EVERYONE you pass on the road. I don’t know if it was because it was 30 degrees and I had the top down – or the yellow car – maybe it was both!
7) Amazing Fit and Finish. There were no squeaks, rattles or anything to be disappointed with. This is definitely a well-executed interior.
8) The top operation was much simpler than the video demonstrated. It took merely 15 seconds to lower the top from unlatching it inside the car.
9) Steering wheel radio controls – love these!!!
10) Legroom – more room inside than my S2000.
11) Amazing looks – this SKY makes my Honda look pathetic in comparison.
12) Attention to Detail – if Saturn puts this much thought into future vehicles – the future is very - very bright.
13) The hood insulation liner has SKY imprinted on it! Very cool.

My gripes with the car are few – the trunk is arguably smaller than I’d like – however with the top up – I was able to put a backpack, soft-sided carry on bag and two winter coats in the trunk with no problem. By biggest gripe with the car is that I cant buy one now! I have to wait until Saturn starts building them for real.

I’m going to have to change my name from SaturnGuy3 to SKY GUY when I get mine.

Richard

P.S. I posted Pics in my Photo Gallery.

So SaturnGuy3 how in the heck did you get to test drive one? Is your best bud a Saturn or GM exec. or Eng.?

You are one lucky dude. Thanks for the feedback. I just sold my 99 Miata that I dearly loved and am hoping the Sky is not a let down.

Based on the testimony of people that have drove them.. (just a couple on this site so far) its not sounding as if it'll be a let down. Even though, I must say I'm jealous of someone who even gets a test drive!.. those cars niiiice

I was invited to drive one by someone at GM who has one for a company car. Being on the SKY waiting list - I couldnt refuse the opportunity

No the SKY is not a let down at all.

Freaking Awesome ! Thanks for the report. Encouraging news for a 6-1 guy. Hope the comments on fit and handling pan out for the production models. Like the yellow a lot, goes back to the first Mazdas and Porsches I saw that rekindled my fascination with the roadster that goes back to TR-6s and MGBs.

This was an actual production model with an actual VIN! So i think the fit and finish will be on par with the ones that end up at Saturn Retailers.

Hey, where I work we get to drive them a lot. They are great fun cars. Not too great in the snow. BUt then again, who buys this car for the winter? What you all will really love is the lovely reinforcments placed inside the truck underneith the latch arms. This pencil braces effectively kill any chance on being able to put a golf bag on anything long inside the truck. Hope you guys were planning on packing even lighter than Solstice owners.
