Default Vent Selector frozen?

This happened a year ago and lasted for about a week. Its very annoying. Basically, last night we got a lot of snow, and today when I went to get in my car and turn on the heat...the blower is still operating, but no matter which vent I select, nothing happens. A little bit comes out of each vent, but all of the sound is coming from the passenger side on the floor. Anyone else have this problem? and can I fix it myself?

Grrrrr... I just got back from SATURN OF OKEMOS, I HATE THAT PLACE!

The dooshbag at the desk was like, it will be $77 for us to look at it and more if you want us to fix it. He was a dick, and I want to get rid of my car now because of him. If you are in the lansing area, go to saturn of grand ledge, becuase saturn of okemos sucks!

I live in ohio and have had the same problem this week. If you feel up to it what you can do is remove the cover panel that has all the workings for the radio and hvac stuff it's the large panel that looks like ET's head. I used a small flathead screw driver and some business cards to avoind marking up the plastic. it will "pop" out as the clips disengage form the dash you will have to unplug the hazard light wire. once the cover is free take the radio out. no need to unplug any of the wires. the screw head is 7mm by the way. once the radio is out of the way (leave it dangel) you can see in (with a flashligt) to the area right behind the controls for the selector. what i found is the peg that slides in a grove came out. if you turn the knob for the vent selector all the way to the left you should be able to reach in an place the peg back inside the rail. there is also a hole on the selector the peg does not go in there. you will see the peg will slide in a track it looks almost round. i had to do this two days in a row because when it's cold i turn and force the knob before the car has warmed up. once warm there is no problem and as far as i'm concerned ther shouldn't be one in the first place. so just rember not to turn it untill it gets warmed up. replace the radio and rember to plug in your hazard lights. hope this helped

No need to use a screwdriver on the cover -- just turn the air vents down, grab and yank. It will come loose. Doesn't help with any tools you might need once it's off, but it keeps you from gouging up the plastic

Hi,

I suppose you don't want to hear this but there is a TSB on this issue.

04-01-38-011 AUG 04 A/C - Knobs Won't Rotate/Restricted Air Flow

If you are in warranty then you get this fixed "Free".

If not then you can still give them the TSB # and they can get right to the fixing and not waste time looking for the problem.

Might save some money that way.

Got this list from http://www.alldata.com/TSB/53/035325iV.html

Hope it helps.

Hi,

Well enjoy taking your dash apart. I ended up leaving my ION at the dealership a few days and drove a couple loaner cars during repairs.

After repairs I had to take it back because someone forgot to reinstall a sound proofing item on the steering wheel so I could hear a lot more engine noise.

I suspect this repair wasn't cheap so it's a good idea you are a DIYer, so might I recommend getting copies of the service manuals and TSBs you will need before hand...
