Default New SL1 owner, couple of questions

Hi,

I just purchased a 2002 SL1 from Saturn of Haverhill (MA). It seems to be a quite capable car and I hope it will serve to be a reliable commuter car for the next few years. I have a couple of questions if that's OK.

Are there good but relatively inexpensive aftermarket alarm systems? This car does not have the power doors, locks etc. I read about an interesting system, in which you have to insert a plug to use from Ravelco. They do not give prices on their home page but you can read more about it here.

http://www.neverstolen.com/index.html

Should I be concerned about the car being stolen? I know it is a pretty basic model but it is the last year of it's existence and I know that can be attractive to thieves.

Also, any recommendations for direct headlamp replacements? I'm not talking about retrofitting with an HID system or something like that but rather a different lamp that might provide more light then the stock. I am extremely night blind and try not to drive at night whenever possible.

Lastly and this isn't real important but anybody purchase relatively inexpensive 6 1/2" speakers (say less then $150 per pair) that is a marked improvement over the factory speakers? I'm not going to replace the Saturn single cd head unit but would invest in changing the front speakers if it would make a noticeable difference. Unfortunately I just left a car with a nice audio system but finances dictate not being able to replicate it in this car.

Thanks for any responses. I look forward to driving the car.

I don't really think you should be concerned about anyone stealing your car yet. Just make sure you lock your doors--thats what I do with mine

http://www.danielsternlighting.com has some good additional lighting. I'd get VERY GOOD driving/fog lights to augment the OE headlights, and follow HIS advice.

I have Sylvania Silverstars in my car, and they provide a nice clear white light that lights up the road better.

I have a 97 SL1, I never lock the doors and often leave the windows down... and its not that i live in the nicest part of the world but no one has ever broken into my car or done anything to harm it. Infact I went down to Philly one time to watch the races and there was a Escalade, my car, and my friends Galant (eck), and my friends Galants windows were smashed out! They had to walk around my car to smash the one window and stand between my car and his to smash the other window.

I use the sylvania "Cool Blue" bulbs in my car. They provide better light then the stock bulbs at a fraction of the silverstar price.

Me too. Definitely worth the money, even when I paid $20x4 for them. I've seen them as cheap as $22ish for 2 on sale at Advance.

as far as that alarm goes...ya, sounds nice if u dont want the car stolen, but anyitems u have in teh car are as good as gone. i would get an alarm to supplement it, cause most petty thieves tend to run from the alarm...then again, nno alarm will stop stuff from being stolen if sumone wants ur stuff enough...

Thumbs Up

When I bought my '94 SC-2, the paper around the edge of my REAR speakers had cracked in the Florida sun, so I went to Circuit City and found some JBL's for $69/pr plus installation. Made a big difference, and didn't have to be upgraded when I added an Alpine CD changer a year later.

I have actually found the 2000-2002 SL series headlights to be the best that I have ever had in a vehicle.

With those two little high beams (and the silverstars to match), idiots get religion quick when you high beam them for not turning down their lights.
