Default How much automatic transmission fluid...

... does it take to for a change?

I want to make sure I have enough on hand for when I change it next weekend.

Dexron III only is still the recommendation?

Around 4.5 liters. I would add 4 and then with the engine idling check the dip stick to see where you are at and slowly add a bit to the proper amount. There is a hot and cold indicator on dip stick.

Of course! Just slightly more than the gallon jug I was planning to purchase...

Thanks for the info.

Auto trans, right? Just checking

Dex III or ATF marked as Dexron/Mercon compatible. There are some good synthetics that fall under the latter.

I think some TES295 approved fluids also work, but

Quote:
do not fall to the claims of some companies that claim that their product is TES 295 approved. The statements infer that these products "are designed to meet", "are equivalent to", "meet or exceed", etc. When determining whether or not a fluid is TES 295 approved, look and/or ask for one of two things:

-The Allison TES 295 approval number
-The Allison Approved logo
TES 295 approved includes Castrol Transynd and Mobil Delvac Synthetic ATF. Note that Transynd and Delvac are brand names that can encompass more than one type of fluid, so the fallback is to read the package and look for Dex/Merc compatible to make sure you get the right fluid.

I just did an ATF change after CV axle replacement last week. Including a new filter, the refill took 4.5 quarts. As for fluid, I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic multivehicle ATF for years without issue, this time I went with Pennzoil Platinum synthetic LV multivehicle. A couple hundred miles on the fluid and no issues.
