Default Sc2 burning oil at highway speeds

I've been driving this sc2 for months now... I don't ever have to add oil unless I take a trip on the highway(55mph+ for longer than 5 minutes)... Then it seems to burn oil quickly. What would cause this? I know saturns burn oil normally. But I've put almost 3000 miles and the only times I need to put oil in it is when I run it on the highway. Daily driving it is fine. I shift at 2500(averaging 32 mpg) but on the highway It can rev as high as 3500 in fifth gear.

It's the nature of the beast. The higher sustained rpm's definitely increase the oil burning rate as it doesn't allow as much time for the oil to drain back through the oil rings.

I was hoping it was something to do with the pcv system.. Lol I know that these usually burn oil but it's just odd that it can go a month without burning any noticeable amount and then burn a quart on a 30 minute trip down the interstate.. It only has 80k on the motor roughly. I had a sl2 that went 175k and didn't burn a drop between changes and it drove 9 hours back and forth to Chicago every weekend for 8 years.

Right? Every other s series that I've owned has burned oil. This was my moms car and she drove it to Chicago every weekend(4:30 one way) and to Indianapolis every weekday for work(1:30 one way) for years and never recalls adding oil between changes. The thing that finally killed the car was a head gasket blew. It had reverse slam for about 2 years before we sold it to some used car dealer to fix and sell.

The non-oil burners seem to be the ones that got sustained highway use, keeping the engine hot and avoiding carbon buildup on the oil rings.

There were a number of Cadillac models that had the same issues - GM tech's explanation was that they weren't driven hard enough. They were typically owned by an older generation that rarely drove them out of town.

Anyways, for existing oil burners, keep the revs below 3K and it will slow down the oil loss.

"Italian tuneup"?

If you drive a lot of flat highway, don't rely on cruise, and don't use 5th gear much in the city, a 5th gear swap might be of interest - lower rpms means less oil burning and more mpg (see thread started by ShawnV in the mods forum)

The oil consumption on my '95 is tolerable during normal usage around town (1 qt per 1,100 miles), but it doubled on the few sustained freeway-speed trips I've taken it on (2 x 2,500 miles and 1 x 800 miles). On those trips I just carried a jug of oil in the trunk, and every time I filled up I also topped it off with about 1/3 qt of oil. Around here in normal usage it's more like a 1/3 qt. every 2-3 weeks. As far as I can tell, the consumption hasn't gotten worse in the eight years I've had it and otherwise it runs fine, so I can live with it.

I may do the 5th gear swap if/when my clutch goes out. I've been reading a lot about it. Only thing is I do like cruise control.

There have been some oil use improvements using a fixed orifice PCV valve. Delco CV 4000C, Autozone PCV 1009 DL, Fram FV 410. About $3 for the Autozone one, maybe worth a shot.
