Default air intake sensor

Hi, i have a '99 SW2. I noticed on the intake tube that's before the air filter, there is a sensor. Is this a mass airflow sensor?
I also have a hole on the side of my airbox on the side where the upper coolant hose runs past that looks like it probably used to have a cap on it.
Would this hole be altering my air/fuel mixture since a lot of the air going into my car is not going past the sensor?
Thanks

The sensor is probably the air intake temp sensor, similar to the ECTS.

Fuel / air mix is monitored by the O2 sensor once is is warmed up. The hole likely has no significant effect under normal operatign conditions.

The hole is probably for a missing sound supression box that connected to it (sort of a resonant cavity - I forget the part name - intended to smoth out the air flow and related sound). It connected via a roughly 1 1/2 inch diameter hard plastic tube. This box was attached to the top back side of the radiator.

That _is_ the air intake temp sensor (IAT). Our cars do not have a mass airflow sensor.

Your car is evidently missing the intake resonator (I bet it sounds a bit "rice-y", right?). As said, air/fuel mixture happens way downstream, so that's not affected, but what is affected is related to your first question. Since the engine is pulling in some air that's not measured by the IAT, and since that air (the hole being near the exhaust manifold) is usually warmer, the PCM is being "fooled" in part about the temp of the air that the engine is breathing. You can fix that by finding a replacement resonator at a junkyard, or simply plugging the hole; it's said that a cap from a gallon jug (such as anti-freeze) fits it quite nicely.
