Default 10w-40 Oil

So, long story short. I end up putting 2 quarts of 10w-40 in, read the manual, and in fine print it says..

"As shown in this chart, SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10W-30 if it's going to be 0 degress Fahreinheit or above. These numbers on an oil container show its viscoisity, or thickness. DO NOT use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50 or 10W-40."

Will that oil have any serious effects? Im getting an oil change from a buddy in a week and i bought a case of 10W-40 should I just buy a new case of 5W-30? Thanks.

From what I've read, 10w-40 is not as stable as other grades.

5w-30 and 10w-30 is suitable for any car, in almost any climate. I've used 20w-50 on motorcycles, and never had an interest in using 10w-40.

I would not worry about it too much, as you already had 2 QTS of (X grade) in the engine already..

And yes, Return that 10W40, and Get 5 or 10 W 30.

For my 97, it's 4 qts.
Also you are supposed to use oil with the "starburst" symbol which is 5w-30 or 10w-30. The -30 weights are "energy-conserving". Something about additives. Modern engines are built to closer tolerances. So the -40 and -50 weights are not needed anymore.
BUT 10-40 is better than NO oil! Temporarily.

(I put 20w-50 car oil into my Honda Shadow for its first oil change. Then I asked the dealer why there is car oil and motorcycle oil. "GET THAT OIL OUT OF THAT BIKE!" he said. "IT WILL RUIN IT!"
Bull. It will outlast me. MC oil just makes more profit for dealers. There is a lot of B.S. out there.)
But use the correct grade for your Sat.

I'm topping off the used car dealer fill with 10W-40 Maxlife as needed until I replace the cam cover gasket on my '96. Then I'm going to run M1 0W-40. If you're using a conventional oil, I'd recommend 5W-30, maybe Pennzoil.
