2003 VUE 3.0L
Default 03 Vue..3.0 .. 150k miles..cutting out on startup.

For some reason..Never done that before. Mechanic says probably a leaky

vacuum hose. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Is there an area I

could put some soapy water on to look for leaks? thx in advance..bo

Anyone, including mechanics, can make armchair quarterback guesses at your expense. Some background history may help to draw a picture of your Vue's maintenance. Is the check engine indicator on after the random engine die off?

He is a volkswagon mech working weekends for people. He replcd the valve

cover gaskets a little while back. Has done some brake work on the Vue. He

did a diagnostics each time he has it and found a thermostat warning one time

and a p2008 i've decided not to address right now. It doesn't really die off..It

just chugs along about 6 - 8 rpm. Car has been maintained well and usually

pretty quick for 150k miles...the mechanic likes the engine..said gm finally

did something right...He has scheduled it for next weekend..I just thought

I would look to see if I could spot the leakage...I guess soapy water isn't that

great an idea since it might get sucked into the engine if there was a leak.

Was the timing belt replaced at 100k miles? Spark plugs at 100k miles?

P2008 Intake Manifold Runner Circuit Open Bank 1 - Read more at: https://www.obd-codes.com/p2008

If the IMRC valve is stuck in the open position, the shorter intake passages, normally used during wide open throttle but closed in everyday driving to use the longer passages, may be the reason for this issue. It's not wise to ignore error codes unless you have an open wallet for repair shops to pad a bill. This description might be the worse case scenario with best case being a dead or disconnected solenoid. The imrc valve uses vacuum to operate the intake manifold blade to switch from long passages to short ones for performance during wide open acceleration. If the blade is stuck in the performance mode, this may be affecting normal idling, startup and regular driving. The solenoid is electrically commanded by the ecm when the throttle position sensor is at wide open throttle. The solenoid valve controls the vacuum diaphragm that pulls the intake blade inside the intake manifold open. A spring returns the blade to closed position for normal driving. Vacuum, power and solenoid operation are checked to determine where fault lies. Power is 12v applied directly to the solenoid to listen for valve operation, a single click as the valve moves from deactivated position/closed to activated/open position, allowing vacuum to operate the vacuum valve diaphragm. The imrc should be on the right side of the engine, opposite the throttle body.

Plain water is good enough if there's a vacuum leak as water won't harm an engine idling. Any water sucked in with an idling engine simply slows rpm immediately or stops the engine. An alternate fluid can be almost any solvent that would ignite when ingested into a vacuum leak, raising rpm.

If this were my vehicle, I would jump on the error code and begin troubleshooting instead of ignoring it.
