So are you trying to put the 96 engine into the 94 or the 94 engine into the 96?

Either way, it's not going to work.

Here's why:

Generation Years break down like this:

91-94/95 is Gen 1
95-99 is Gen 2
00-02 is Gen 3

Unfortunately an engine from a first Gen model year car is not going to work in a Gen 2 model year because the Gen 1 cars were OBD-1. Gen 2 and Gen 3 cars are OBD-2.

Unless you have a ton of time to try do a frankenstein swap, your best option is going to be trying to find a 96 model year manual trans engine to drop in, or something that may be a year or two newer.

OBDI vs ODB2 isn't an issue as the sensors haven't changed (there are exceptions).

the issue you'll run into going backwards is that the earlier EGR won't bolt to the later head. Pretty much makes that a no go.

96-98 should be the easiest to swap a '96 motor into.

Read the Swap Wiki to get an idea what changed over the years.
