Default SL2 brain farts

This is the best description that I could come up with for my 93 SL2s performance this morning.
Background - car has about 105k miles on it. I converted it to a manual tranny about 18 months ago. It's been operating perfectly since then with the exception of a loose battery connection causing loss of power a few months ago.
This morning, just before getting on the highway, I had to apply the brakes vigorously to avoid someone that pulled out in front of me. Although they didn't activate, I noticed that the anti lock brake warning light was on.
As I was looking at it, suddenly the instrument panel went berserk. All the idiot lights flashed on briefly, the speedo went to zero, the tach dropped a bit, the temp and fuel gages deflected and there was a momentary but noticeable decrease of engine power. The engine did not falter though and the radio stayed on without loss of station.
I turned onto the highway at 55-60mph, and for the next 5 miles this behavior repeated every few seconds until I got off at the exit. From there on it behaved quite normally the remainder of the 7 miles to work on 35 mph roads. The check engine light never came on except perhaps when all the idiot lights briefly flashed - I didn't notice.
I'm dreading the ride home tonight.
Any ideas what's going on here?

I had a car that was terrified of being overtaken by a semi in the rain. The problem only occurred when that happened.

We had to wait until a rainy day and I took him on a drive along the highway looking for a semi to overtake us. Took us days.

It was a dodgy fuse in the engine bay.

Bad grounds make electronics do all kinds of weird things. Learned that last semester in Electronic Circuit Design.

Well, I made it home okay tonight but avoided the highway because of an accident.
I took off both battery terminals and the main body tie point near the A/C pressure switch, cleaned them all up with a brass wire brush and put it back together. The harder-to-get-to connections on the bell housing look clean solid and tight so I didn't touch them.
The only thing that seemed a slight bit corroded was the + batt terminal.
We'll see how it goes tomorrow.
Thanks for the input.
