Default White Saturn Astra XR progress

It's about time I got started on a progress thread. I've been sitting on these pictures for a long time, so the whole write up is gonna take a while to do.

It all started when I bought a base 5dr Astra XE in June 2011, manual trans, cd30 with BID, plain steering wheel with no radio controls. Boy, did I ever get the modding bug! Right away I knew I wanted to brand it something other than Saturn. The Opel blitz was too simple looking for me, so the chicken holding a flag won me over. By the time I traded it in July 2012 for a 3dr Astra XR I had gotten it to this point:

Vauxhall facelift grille, plastidipped black
Chevrolet Cobalt SS gunmetal 18" wheels, Insignia centre caps
Drilled rotors, ceramic pads, gunmetal painted calipers, white decals

Full blue SMD interior conversion
VXMMI gen 1, blue SMDs
Leather 3-door steering wheel, had to get the wheel controls enabled with tech2
Removed the Saturn airbag emblem, fitted the chrome insert from a Vaux centre cap

Before

After

6000K HIDs, LED bulbs all around (rear foglamp made to work along with the main brake/signal lamp)
Insignia washer jets, deristricted airbox, homemade 2.5" PVC intake
Fitted a 1-1/4" hitch carrier, with a hitch mounted bike rack

|Insignia VXR 18" rep wheels, Eibach SportLines

Fast forward to July 2012, I really started looking at the 3 door Astra XR more and more, just something about the look of a Astra Nurburgring and Arctic VXR that I couldn't get out of my head. In under 2 weeks I removed every mod I could from the 5 door (incl rotors) and traded it in for a white 3 door Super happy with the deal I got on it, and immediately realized this was the one I should have gotten in the first place.
The 3-door lines are amazing, plus this meant I could start my work on an Astra VXR replica
It came with the CDC40 GID combo and upgraded speakers.

The modding started that first weeked, doing everything the second time around was soooo much faster. I fitted my Vauxhall grille, new style rear emblem, HIDs, put in my front component speakers, leather XR3 steering wheel, and did the emblem mod on the airbag:

Cutting out the emblem like this leaves the airbag unmarked. I've seen plenty of airbags that look like the emblem was pried off with a screwdriver.. ugh.

Boot and airbag emblems

Love the new style griffin

This write up is a work in progress, there's lots more, but it's a lot to do all at once! Comments are welcome

Wow, that is so impressive! I have my Astra rebadged as Vauxhall as well but I don't have the steering wheel done. When you have time, can you write up exactly what you did to change it out? I'm not that handy but I hate looking at that Saturn logo all the time!!!

Well done!!!! I love the new Vauxhall logo too...jealous!!!

Haha wowww really?? I can't believe it was that close! My girlfriend was with me that day and actually pointed out the black one, but I recall it cost more and I was totally set on the white one. We drove up from Oakville so I didn't want to leave empty handed, but the guy sure made me work to get the trade in price I wanted! A blue 3door would have been my second color choice if this one fell through.

I haven't seen any other white 3doors come up on autotrader since then, and my white XE 5 door didn't stick around for too long either, it was gone pretty quick. Someone must have appreciated the blue LEDs haha. And they listed my 5 door for the same price I paid for the XR 3 door, super weird.

Bad really? Do you keep going back to them for service? I haven't been back since I drove the car home in July, I do all my own work. Actually the battery died the very next day, but my local GMC dealership gave me a new one and billed it to Macmaster because it was the certified pre-owned GM vehicle warranty thing.

Thanks for the offer, where in Brampton is the shop? But I already put in 6000k HIDs and LEDs the first weekend I had the car. Since then I've tried 5000k and 4300k bulbs just to see the color diffs. I'm going back to 5000k when I install my fancy new 25W cree bulbs.

Do you have the same ill-fitting Curt brand hitch on your car as I have on mine? That brand hitch put on an Astra is a joke. Just had to be said.

Yep I still have it in my garage. I used it the entire time I had my XE 5 door, but I never tried it in the XR3. What problems did you have with yours, exhaust clearance I'm guessing? The XE5 has the hidden tailpipe like in my pic, I never had any rubbing or rattling. Installation couldn't have been easier, the wire guides to feed the bolts made it easy.

I didn't try it in my XR3 when I got it, knowing I'd be doing the center exit exhaust at some point. Clearance looks like it would be tight for the stock XR tailpipe though.

No. I had to grind off about a half an inch of the hitch metal above and around the muffler so they would not hit each other and rattle while going over bumps in the road.
