Default Auto trans "muck" question

Anyone who's changed an auto trans filter on a 1.9 has seen the fine metal particles on the ring magnet that look like mud. My question is, since the 1.9 auto doesn't have bands, what wears in the auto trans to produce this "muck"?

First of all, bands are friction material (like a brake shoe) using a resin impregnated paper bonded to a metal substrate. The S-Sat uses no bands but has clutch plates which are made similarly - friction material bonded to metal.
Either way the clutch material that wears off is non metallic and won't wind up on your magnet.
What you do find on the magnet are misc metal wear particles that were either built in at assembly or abrade off some part inside the trans during operation.
A small amount of this is quite normal.

What he said^. That fine "fur" of metal on the magnet is both typical and NORMAL. Just wipe it off as best you can and reuse the magnet.
