Default Drivers Side Door Lock- '00 SL-1

2000 SL-1, auto, 78k, power locks.

Complaint: "The drivers side door lock button is broken"

Description of Problem: "When I depress the "Lock" or "Unlock" side of the button, it doesn't 'click' into lock or unlock like usual - it just depresses in goes farther than it should. The doors will still lock, but when the button is depressed in the motors in the other locks will start to grind."

Tried solution: When I lock the doors, if I press the opposite way I can "even it out" by pressing unlock until it sits normally in the middle. (Does that description make sense?? haha)

I can still manually lock/unlock the drivers side door, and all other locks work fine, including remote lock/unlock/alarm activate.

What should I do? Is this a simple fix?

Caveat - I have no experience with this issue

It sounds like whatever the switch is mounted on is broken from your description of it 'evening out' if the other switch is held down. It might be an easy fix, but there is no way of knowiing until you open it up and look

http://www.differentracing.com/tech_articles/index.html

shows how to remove both the outside and interior door panels. I have not removed the interior panel, but the exterior panel was really easy to remove

NO NEED TO REMOVE THE DOOR PANELS.

Your switch is bad. There is a spring that "evens out" the switch and it is broken.

I just replaced mine in a 1998 SW2. VERY easy fix. Find a switch on eBay (there are plenty for $15 or less). The original switch is easily removed by taking out the screw that holds the switch housing and door handle and removing it. Then just unplug the wiring off the old switch, pry it out, replace it, and plug the wires onto the replacement switch. Easily a 30 minute or less job.

This answer sounds much easier! Thanks!! I'll unscrew the handle/lock and figure out what I'm looking at. Thankfully, I can still lock/unlock the car, so this can wait until this weekend or next.

If memory serves me (I'm getting older) once you get the screw out you must slide the assembly to the front (or was it to the rear?) to remove it from the door panel. Anyway ... slide it and it will release from the door. There are rods attached to the assembly ... DO NOT REMOVE THEM. They are a royal PITA to get back on, and it isn't necessary. You can pull the handle assy out far enough to turn it over and see what you are doing. Like I said, unhook the wire harness and just push the old switch out (it has spring tabs). Easy fix.

^ ^ ^ experience > a guess

Mostly, I saw your post on page 2 with no responses, so I threw out a guess to bump it back to page 1. Figured someone with experience with your particular issue would drop by...

Find one on eBay (you can see a picture there). Also, the local junk yard is a possibility.

Here's one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1996-...Q5fAccessories

I have purchased from these folks before and they treated me right. As you can see, the writing is worn off this particular switch. Most of them offered for sale are this way. You might be able to browse on eBay and find one that isn't as worn.

Success!! I finally got around to replacing my drivers side power door lock! (And this is coming from someone who can barely change their oil!)

Vehicle: 2000 SL-1
Repair: Replace Drivers Side Power Door Lock Switch
Replacement Part: "L/H Door Lock"/"Switch ASM-DR L", Part # 21023581
Cost: $15
Time: 10-15min
Tools: Phillips screwdriver, profanity

How To:
1) For annoyance sake, remove "LOCKS" fuse - 30 sec
2) Remove housing cover for handle/power locks (Phillips head)- 30 sec
3) Pull out handle/lock switch assembly from door - 30 sec
4) Remove old door lock switch - 5-10 min (profanity)
5) Remove wires to old door lock switch - 2-3 min (profanity)
6) Attach wires to new lock switch - 30 sec
7) Put in new lock switch (it snaps in easily) - 30 sec
8) Push in handle/lock assembly back in door - 30 sec
9) Screw the housing back on - 30 sec
10) Put back in "LOCKS" fuse - 1 min

I'm going to assume, had I taken it to a dealership for a repair, it would have been a flat $50-60 just to look at the car and then on top of that the $15 part! = Savings of $75-80!!!

If anyone has a need for a broken 2000 S-Series drivers side power door lock, let me know and I'll mail it to you...

I bumped this up to the front because I wanted to ask a question.

Why would the phillips screw and the whole assembly need to be removed at all?
Yesterday, I just used a thin-bladed flat screwdriver at the top of the switch, pried in and downward gently, and out came the switch.

Whole time to replace it was probably under 2 minutes.

Is an '00 SL1 switch replacement different than a '98 SW2 ???

Keep in mind I know nothing about cars, so I was just doing what seemed to make sense.

I unscrewed the door handle/power lock switch assembly and was able to take out the switch from there.

Hi guys,

I'm having this same problem for both my driver side and passenger side. Both locks have broken springs and you have to carefully balance them to avoid the chatter.

I'm trying to fix them, but I'm having trouble finding the part online. Does anyone know where I can get it? I have a 97 Saturn SL1.
