Default Engine crank but no start

Yesterday, for the first time, my 93 SL2 gave me a hard time starting. It ususally starts right up-after only 1 or 2 cranks. So I am in the habit of just turning the key for a second and releasing. But yesterday, it coughed but did not start. After that, it would crank but not start. I tried 8 or 9 times, waiting inbetween. Finally, I turned the key and it fired right up. It has been starting fine since then. No warning lights are on, and I had the car checked for codes this morning and there wern't any.

What could it be??? I worry because this is how the trouble began on my 99 SW2, and that turned out to be a bad computer. But, there were codes, many conflicting.

Any ideas?

I am no expert on the subject, but it sounds as if your crank position sensor (CPS) has gone bad. The pcm needs the positon of the crank to start and when the sensor stops working, it cant start the car. But it will occasionally start working again, which makes me think it is the cps.

Could be your CPS as mentioned above. Other things that could cause this problem could be bad/loose plugs or wires and possibly a bad coil pack, or you could have a air or fuel issue or even a stuck throttle plate (in the throttle body). The first 3 areas to look into with a problem like this are air, fuel and spark.

I cant agree more!!!! CPS! I would change that sensor 1st before you spend more money that you dont need to. I made that mistake.

Where is the CPS? I had the car checked for codes today and there were none. Would this rule out the CPS?

If the engine attempted to start (coughed) it may be a sign of a fuel problem.
Either a bad pressure regulator or a failing fuel pump.

Also it maybe just a minor flood to the engine (Since it won't start the first time, and then keep cranking).

Have an habit to let the Fuel pump primes the system first (simply turn the key to ON, but don't crank yet). You'll hear the pump whine for 5 seconds then stop, you can crank the engine then. It should fire right up.

The CPS doesnt throw codes but it sometimes allows the enging to start...thats what happened with me. It is at the bottom/back of the engine in a nearly impossible spot to get to above the starter. Make sure the car is SOLID on the jackstands before you climb under there. I also leave the jack on one side just touching the frame incase the stands give away. I cant stress it enough...SAFETY... SOLID STANDS ON SOLID GROUND!!!. If you dont think you can do it safely take it in and have it done. lol can we tell i dont like going under cars?
