Default Backup lights don't work unless...

I have a 2002 SL1. About 9 months ago we had to change the switch for the backup lights. In the past 2 months I found the backup lights don't work unless I hold the shifter hard in reverse. Does anyone have any lay-man explainations on how to resolve this issue?

There's no holding an autotragic in reverse...hard or soft...

Dunno about the issue, I'd check the cables to see if the ends are frayed or stretched or something.
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Make sure that the opening where the back up switch threads into the shift tower is not stripped. I had the same problem, and some how the threads in the opening were pretty much gone. I ended up having to replace the entire shift tower cover with one from a JY - they are all the same from 91-02.

I tried JB weld, and rethreading, but that did not hold.
