I am changing mine every 30k with Mobil1, which I'm sure is overkill. The regular interval is 100k, so 30-50k would be more than sufficient.

Owners manual says only at 6/7k and then never again. The autos need it every 30k and 100k sounds good to me for a 5spd.
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

i work on big trucks. they come with synthetic in trans and diffs. we have them from 500k to 1mil miles. they never get changed. ive seen them run to near empty. fix leak fill up see you later. if you can run atf with 1 change for life of vehicle, i think syn upgrade is good for long time. 100k sounds good.

2.5 qts. I believe. As far as the interval goes, at least 100K in a 5-speed. You could never change it and probably not see a difference.

Changing fluid is not a bad idea and can make the difference e between a gearbox that goes 150 or maybe 200 K and one that goes 300K or more. The gearbox is a closed system with no filter and oil does get contaminated with time and only changes will remove it. I go with the 30 to 50K interval(depending on usage, longer if highway miles, short is city miles) Factory guideline are not for longest possible service life because they do want you to buy another car.

When I changed mine at 111,000 miles, it came out clear, thin, and really dirty. I'll probably switch to synthetic after 30,000 and see how it looks when it comes out, and base the next interval off of that. I have a feeling, though, that synthetic should handle the 100k no problem

It is not whether the oil breaks down and shears out but rather that it gets dirty with time.

Auto manufactuer's are really lame on transaxle fluid change intervals. The only reasonable ones I've seen (on my cars) is my current Windstar that says to change it every 21,000 (severe) or 30,000 (normal) miles. And that's mainly becuase the tranny's they use are crap, I'm sure.

When I bought my SL1 @ 116k miles, I changed the tranny fluid to a cheap AAP Dex3; and then a few thousand miles later dumped in Mobil 1. The fluid that came out originally, before the cheap AAP oil, was dirrrrty. When I dumped that Mobil 1 30k miles later, it didn't look new anymore either. Not that you can judge a fluid based on visual inspections.

Now it's almost 30k miles again and I'll probalby just change it before wintertime. I did notice improved shifting after using M1. Don't know if I'll pony up the $6/quart for the stuff again but It only uses 2.5 of them I guess.
