Default OBDII code reader on ebay...compatability

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...sPageName=WDVW

Hello all.

I just got a check engine light on last night and looking for a OBDII code reader. I found this on E-Bay and need to know if this will work.

Anyone know if it will work on a 1999 SW1 (Canadian model if that matters) with a standard trans?

Thanks.
Jerry.

my problem with it is that it only has a four digit display, OBD-II codes are 5 digits, so i'm guessing the first digit is being omitted. the first digit of a OBD-II code stand for what system the code applys to. most codes you see are P codes, or Powertrain codes. you also have B codes (body control module), C codes (chassis), U codes (network), and i think one or two others. but to be fair, i don't know any non-P codes that set the Check engine light, they normally have their own lights. also being Canadan, i *think* it has the same protocol, but am not 100% sure, the Ebay listing doesn't say anything about "american models only" or "canadan models only". but ether way, it has a return policy.

in short - it should work for your check engine light, but if your ABS, SIR, or service wrench light comes on, forget about it.

Ok. For those of you here looking for a cheap DYI code reader this is the one! Arrived last night and hooked it up and voila...code 0401 EGR insufficient flow.
Sierra was concerned that it only had a 4 digit display but the display scrolls accross and the manual that comes with it has all the codes listed in it.

Now I just have to figure out where the EGR valve is ... lol

It runs whatever the rest of GM stuff uses up until the CANBUS stuff (05ish and newer)

J1850 VPW says scantool.net.

Is this the right scan tool linky ?
I just got a new laptop and figured what the heck. I did see that Actron thing but I figure a laptop compatible one should be more "powerful" with the right software.

I got an ELM 327 based box for my laptop. It's compatible with all the different systems so I can use it on my other cars. It's a little fancier than that one and was only a few dollars more. Works good on my Saturn.

It looks like this:

I'm wondering if there's any internal difference to the connector (between OBDII specifications). If not and it just "re-wires" the connections (the same way on all "models") then it just depends on software to figure the rest out and I can get software easially. Externally they all look the same (short of the label) and I'm sure it won't be advertised that it's "just the software."

Anyone know of one that does OBDI & II? There's gotta be more info available to OBDI then what a paper clip can do and I'd prefer not to buy 2 adapters (more to lose).

Just looked at the bottom of the ad...bunch o' links to FREE software
I'll go with what ever's cheapest then fix my "mistake" later if need be.
