It's not in the engine. look under the car at your exhaust pipe just before the cat and after the downpipe. you will see the O2 sensor sticking out of the side of the pipe.

The bank one HO2S on the ION engine is in the exhaust manifold. You will need to remove the heat shield one the manifold and you will see it. It is one the drivers side just before the manifold to pipe joint.

I got a few codes off the car indicating it might be starting to fail....

My mileage is way off and my performance is not good either....

Just wondering from the descriptions above if this is something I can do myself - does the car have to be on a lift to replace the sensor????

Replaced mine at 80k miles because it was throwing a code. Could also smell the exhaust. You can do it yourself. You have to remove the heat shield. Remove the connector. You'll need the special O2 socket. Fairly easy.

I found it easy. Stand in front of engine reach toward firewall. (make sure engine is cold or cool) its right on the exhaust pipe. With 2 wires coming off of the sensor. This is the up stream O2 sensor. The down stream on is under the car on the exhaust pipe. This is easy to get to. Passanger side easy way to get to it. I found out that if you replace one it is better to replace the other one at the same time.
