Default Mysterious no-start problem

Hi Saturn Forum,

Living in New Orleans, and its getting quite hot down here. It seems to be escalating this strange problem I've been having that Saturn dealers everywhere can seem to diagnose. My car won't start when its hot. This started only after long drives; when I stopped for gas, my car would not start. Now, with the heat is seems to be happening more often. If I leave it until it cools, the car starts fine. Usually, I open the hood and try start it once a minute, for about 10-15 minutes and then it starts.

Here are some clues that may help any of you tech gurus:
1) The car does turn over sometime, but then shuts down
2) The battery is fine.
3) It helps if I pump the gas pedal
4) It doesn't help if I turn the A/C off when I shut down the car
5) It DOES help if, after a long drive, I let the car idle, until the engine fan turns off (I'm not sure thats actually what its doing, but if I let it sit, the revving of the engine eventually calms down. Each time I have done that, I think I've given the engine some time to cool, and I never have a no start afterwards.

I hope you chaps can help; this is getting ridiculous! I know that the car will crap out on our first hurricane evacuation!

Thank you kindly,

Greg

Checked that, apparently the injectors are OK. I will double check with them again?

Ignition control module

Due to the heat issue stated, leads me to believe it is that.....

Yes, the starter appears to be fine . . . ignition control module, I will ask them to look @ as well. Just got a suggestion that it may be the grease inside the ignition switch overheating?

I'll print off all your suggestions and take them to the mechanic . . .thanks!

Crank position sensor; similar heat related issue as the ignition control module.

The grease in the ignition switch is USUALLY a major problem in colder temps, not hotter ones. Not saying it isnt possible, but not likely.

Vapor lock??? Not usually a problem on the fuel injected vehicles, but it is possible.

Ok,

So after a painstaking day at the saturn dealer, watching them run around like chickens with their heads cut off, they concluded (after a 200 buck diagnosis fee) that they can't find any problem with the car. The tech, who they will not allow me to communicate with, wants to replace the ignition cylinder. I've found nothing online that suggests this could be the problem. What do y'all think?? I'm not too keen on these guys throwing parts at me . . . starving student you know?

Greg,
When it is acting up, have you tried wiggling the shifter (Automatic shift console) and pressing the button on the shifter a few times until you hear the electronic switch behind the dash go "click"? I may have the same problem.

It would probably be the ignition module or the crank position sensor. It could also be leaking injectors. Or, gulp, the coolant temp sensor. If the sensors and module are working when tested, then they are working as advertised as far as the tech is concerned. It a matter of testing things when you are having a problem. If the crank position is reading you should see the tach registering about 200 rpm when cranking even if it doesn't start.
