Default Trailer Towing

Anybody got a tip on how to keep a receiver type hitch from rattling when towing an unloaded trailer? Thanks.

I'll assume that you are using the correct size trailer ball and the trailer coupler is tightened up snug against the trailer ball properly...

If you have some slop in the receiver tube, maybe try wrapping a ring of electrical tape to 'shim' it up and take up the slack? Or is it an in and out slop due to the pin?

Yeah, I've tried the tape and it gets eaten up quickly, then it's back to the rattle. Thanks though. Anybody else? Thanks.

Well, I suppose you could step it up and try cutting up a shim out of plastic containers, like a milk jug. Make a sheath that fits into the receiver tube and gets held in place by the pin.
And if it's not durable enough, step up to metal. Home Depot has a selection of metal stock and there is aluminum roof flashing in a roll....

I'm surprised that it's that bad...
What hitch and what drawbar are you using?
Does it pivot on the pin or is it just sloppy in the receiver?

Thanks again but it's not the hitch or draw bar, it's the trailer, a special purpose motorcycle trailer, that has a very light tounge weight when empty.

Maybe try felt stickies....you can get them in Home Depot or most dollar stores...I use them to stop banging cupboard cabinets, but if you put one on each side near the mouth of the receiver, might work. Only costs a dollar or two....

Oh, might try a rubber band! It may not last, but cheap......

When I pull my 5x8 (unloaded), it also makes a lot of noise. When loaded, all is fine.

If you have to pull the trailer (unloaded) is there any place near the front of the trailer and the tongue that you can add some weight? You might could pick up some "barbell" types weights a local thrift shop. Maybe 10 to 25 lbs?

The added weight may quiet the unloaded trailer.

Hope this helps.

etrailer.com has an anti-rattle kit that seems intriguing.

Otherwise adding weight on the front end of the trailer will work.
