1996 SL2
Default Extra holes in trunk lid

We just purchased a 1996 SL2 for my daughter. I'll be picking up plates for it tomorrow, and was looking at the plate mounting area.

I noticed this series of 3 holes in the white painted are. Should there be rubber bumpers in those to prevent the plate from rattling, and chafing the paint (and to keep water out)?

I have a photo, but it appears I cannot post it here until have posted in 25 other threads. SO I can't help by posting a photo...sorry.

Any ideas?

Yes, no bumpers and the plate flutters in the breeze. and rattles. Find some bumpers with the long pointy tails and gently pull them into place. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-bumpers/=12brc5l Push in bumpers and #s 11& 12 shape work best. The #12 shape should do the job. Finding the size you need can be an undertaking though.

Thanks OldNuc.

Really...so those holes are just...holes? They serve no particular purpose?

Thanks for the link. I'll see what I can come up with.

Without a pix it is difficult to exactly say what they were originally for. Plate bumpers is not a bad idea whatever as it does flap around and you do not want it beating on the trunk lid.

I thought the magic number was 15.

This works as well, see the difference?

Now that I'm a respectable forum citizen, I can post a photo of said holes.

Those holes show 2 plate bumpers for US cars and a different plate mounting frame for foreign cars that mounted to those 3 holes. The US cars used the 2 outside holes. The center one is not mentioned so I would put another plate bumper in it.
