Question Rear License plate light screws

Okay, I hate to post about this, but it's getting frustrating. I got some cool LED lights for my rear license plate frame, but when I try and take those little lights off, the screws appear to not be unscrewing. I tried to hold the top (in case it was turning), but still doesn't seem to come off. Anybody know what I am doing wrong in something that should be really simple?

I was stumped on those too for a while! Those screws are just plastic, they can be pulled out carefully with some needlenose pliers. After that, you have to quarter turn the assembly then you can access the lights inside. Hope this helps.

Default Thanks for the help

TheDestroyer: Thanks a lot for the help. I should have known! I felt like such an idiot when I kept turning the pieces, and they weren't moving (outward at least).

I changed the License Plate lamps to a 4 led cluster:

Nice looking LEDS! Are they white or light blue? How does the brightness compare?

They're white LEDs.. in the picture they kind of look blue though, but that's the digital camera's fault. It also really makes the original bulbs look YELLOW in comparison. However in my opinion, white LEDs are not 100% white, but rather slightly blue or cyan. They also seem brighter, but they don't flood as well as the incandescent originals.

Default New License Plate Frames Blue LEDs

Now I have installed blue license plate lamps for my blue VUE:

These are also made with LEDs. This time just one LED per lamp with an inverted cone.

Anyone know the legality of the colored lamps? I don't think it looks half bad on your Vue and it would be something I might consider. I would like to know whether state law (PA) allows it. Nice post.

I guess at the least, the white lights are a slght upgrade...

Looks like no for your state.

For most states the following general rule applies (as quoted to me one night by a City of Watauga, TX, Police officer) "No color other than amber or white on the front, no color other than red, amber, or white on the rear." I am not sure about sides and underneath (or even on top). Generally, clear or amber on the sides is safe, and just about any color underneath is safe as long as you can't *see* the light source. The caveat is that any underbody lighting will tend to attract the attention of the fuzz, and in my case, this is certainly *not* a good thing. :P

BTW, the license plate light color is great, but as with most LEDs, they don't "flood" or disperse like incandescent bulbs, so you wind up with the 2 spotlights and the rest is dark. If you could rig a row of LEDs in that eyelid that had, say, 6 LEDs, that would get you *much* better coverage. Hrmmm, that sounds like a fun project.

Yes, I think they are illegal unless white in most states. I also have an LED on my antenna, and while getting pulled over for something else, I got a "fix it" ticket for the LED. At the time it was a super bright white LED. The way I see it for some of those LEDs is they will nail you if they are pulling you over for something else. But we'll see how long I last with the blue in the rear. I don't think it's very legal at all here in California.

When I had white LEDs on my License Plate Lamps (earlier posts from me), the glow wasn't too bad. Each lamp had 4 leds inside of it.

I do like the row of LEDs idea. Maybe you prefer to make your own, but Lunar Accents does make them.

I got a ticket for a "white light to the rear" when I had a cracked taillight lens. I asked the cop how that was different than white license plate lights to the rear and was told "that's different". Whatever.

I think red LEDs would be cool for the plate. They have a wider angle than the white ones.

But to stay on topic, my plate screws came out without any problems, so I guess I can't relate.

A bigger screw should bite into the plastic better if it's stripped at all.

When I first posted this, I was referring to the little plastic screws (they look like screws) that hold the license plate lamps in, not the plate itself. They have a spot where a phillips screwdriver would fit, so therefore I thought I could screw them out to remove them.

Gotcha.

I've never had any luck with plastic screws.

Well, yes I have, all bad.

Default Plastic Screws!

Oh yeah, I hear you there. Seems like no matter how careful I am at pulling them out, I always get them all scratched up. Too soft of plastic I guess.

I think what I need is a big bag of replacement plastic screws so I can really mess them up getting them out, and then just pop in brand new ones!
