Default Answer as to why my SL burns massive oil and sounds like a go-kart?

Well, first day of driving this car to town. I went about 34 miles and it burned... What looks like 1/2 a quart of oil? When driving up a hill, I have to downshift TWO gears to make it up the hill... And the car sounds like a go kart!

The car told me to shift into 5th, so I obliged... And the car started hopping, sputtering and sounded like a go-kart about to stall! So I downshifted and all was fine.

Not sure what is up with this car... But now i'm wishing I never bought a Saturn. They don't feel safe at all on the road.

201k miles?

1-Replaced the original round nosed plastic coolant sensor with a flat nosed brass one? Rich running @1/4 needle temperature is one tell tale indication. Replacing the old thermostat with a new 195F one will help too.

2-Plugged catalytic converter? Remove the front O2 sensor for a LOUD drive; renewed power means a plugged catcon.

3-Low compression? A compression test will tell.

I honestly do not know what has or hasn't been replaced on this vehicle, as i've only owned it for 1 day. Nor do I know where I would find this "plastic coolant sensor", the front o2 sensor or the pcv. How much does it cost for a compression test? Will any of these solve the 50 miles per quart problem?

I should mention that the temp gauge is indeed at 1/4.

Unknown if it will fix these problems until they are tried....use the search function its a great tool in the forum for information like where to find your plastic temp sensor and how to test for a plugged catalytic converter with the front o2 sensor, etc etc. Its a bit of a learning curve but hey, knowledge is money..the more things you can elimenate the better.
As for a compression test...these are very easy to do yourself and you can buy a compression tester kit at a local parts store for probably about the same as what you will pay to have it done. Than you have one (and the knowledge to use it)
TIP---get yourself a repair manual. Huge help.

Check your EGR valve to. Here is the how to forum with videos and detailed instructions. Get familiar with it, your car has 201K on it

Search 'ECTS' for information about the coolant temperature sensor. As said originally, replace that and the thermostat immediately, and check the cat. That will most likely take care of the drivibility concerns. If that doesn't help, check the EGR valve, and do a compression test.

A functioning ECTS and thermostat may slow the oil consumption a bit (reaching proper operating temperature allows the pistons to expand slightly, and the rings to seal better), however, it sounds like you have a leak or very worn out oil control rings. Many leaks are relatively easy to fix. The cam cover is the most common source of leaks, so check there. If it's the rings, you're in for a full rebuild or a junkyard engine.

I don't believe it's a leak, as I don't see any leaks at all. I do smell oil burning and smoke out of my exhaust though.

Time to learn how to work on your own car it sounds like. It's useful to know.

If you need tools, go buy a 50 dollar kit at any autoparts store and it'll have everything you need.

Coolant Temp Sensor replace:

Watch and learn!

As for the oil burning; Get used to it. Carry a couple quarts with you. All Saturns burn oil.

I drove down to a Convention in Atlanta a couple months ago, from South East Wisconsin. Used 3 quarts there, and back, so 6 quarts total on my trip.

As have I. The oil burning is more common than not. My SL1 seems to not be using any at all so far.

These guys know what they're talking about, so I'd listen up for sure. One thing I can say though, is that road conditions dictate when to up shift, not that shifter idiot light...

I understand the light, which is why I don't use it I shift around 3k rpm depending on road conditions, obviously. The car just feels... Like the previous owner shifted at 7k rpm the entire life of the car and that is why the engine probably needs a rebuild. I wish people would take care of their cars and just treat them kindly!
