Default Auto slam in DRIVE and reverse

I've searched and am not sure I'm finding what I need. I looked at an 2002 SC2 today, that's in better shape then my SL2 in every way except the transmission. (even the sunroof and AC works!)

I did not drive it, since it's at an auction house. I did move it forward and back a couple of times, and it slams into gear.... maybe a bit more in reverse, but still in both directions.

Is this the roll pin? solenoids? valve body? Actually the slam is what breaks the pin, right?

I don't think the slam would do anything to the roll pin. I'd check the ISN.

My understanding is that the slam is usually from a VB problem, but that could be just a bad LP solenoid. Also, I think the slam causes the ISN to loosen.

Agreed, the diff pin problem is unrelated to the slam. The diff pin has either insufficient lube for the locking provided, or insufficient locking for the lube/bearings specified. Take your pick.

I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but the early 2000's Grand Am's had a similar issue with their transmissions, if you shifted straight into drive, the whole car would jump. It was a valve or a piston sticking (inside the tranny), but if you put it in reverse first, then down into drive, it wouldn't slam so hard.

I feel like a newB... what does "ISN" stand for?

My 98 shifts harsh into drive and reverse from park. Doesn't really bother me too much, but if something minor is causing it that's easily fixable I'll try to put a stop to it.

In reference to something inside the trans itself?

Actually, it is the "Input Shaft Nut". Yes, there is also a similar Output Shaft with a similar nut, but the OSN doesn't seem to ever come loose. The ISN is "inside" the trans, but not very deep. There is a cover on the driver-side end of the trans that can be removed to get to the ISN

My understanding of the transmission slam or sometimes called "Reverse Slam" it that it is caused by not maintaining the transmission fluid change intervals. The valve body requires relatively clean fluid.

The valve body passages start to clog up and you start experiencing reverse slam. If you leave it too long then your input shaft nut begins to back off and eventually you start losing gears.

If you catch it early on you can perform the Wolfman Reverse Slam Cure; a procedure to clear the valve body passage ways. It's a low cost easy DIY repair. Google it.

If you leave it too long then you are looking at a valve body repair/replacement and/or input shaft nut re-torque procedure. Both of which are more complex but can still be done DIY if you are game.

I passed on the car.... replacing the solenoid didn't look hard, but I don't want to replace things that I don't know are wrong, and I wasn't seeing a lot of definitive advice/diagnosis in my search.
