Default What is this and where do I get it?

As you can see, this little filter isn't looking so well.

I know WHAT it is and what it does, but what's it called and where can I get one?

OR I would settle for possible homemade/mod replies too. It almost looks like a screen mesh, just need a way to attach it.

Just a debri filter for the HVAC inlet. May possibly also act as a water block to keep water out, but given that it's low density foam I don't think it does a good job of it...just make sure the A/C drain line is clear.

Could ask at the local hardware store if they have scraps from custom screen doors (mine builds them for you), that type of screen plus a good sized RTV bead around the hole will likely work better than factory. Do the bead first, then the screen (don't press into the RTV much, just set it on) then do another bead on top.

It's not meant to keep water out of the cowl, but more to keep leaves and debris out of the cowl where it might plug up the cowl drains.

You could use one of those synthetic kitchen sponges cut to the correct shape, and glue some screen to the bottom. Put a circle of RTV around the bottom of the screen and stick it to the top of the cowl. You can use 1/2" foam weather stripping too.

That's simplistic, of course, but thoroughly doable. Modify it as you need to.

I only realized it was there because while researching the best way to remove smoke odors, there just happened to be a vid talking about spraying lysol into the AC intake to kill off any odors and even mold, so as I poked around under the hood, that's where I found it. Now I just wanna replace it!

Thanks for the ideas, wasn't totally sure how I was gonna go about it and what I should use. I have some heavy "cat proof" screen that I can put over it.

Somebody recycled the bottom of an old flip flop for the foam shape.

Don't recall what I used, but I used my hot glue gun rather than open up new RTV.

I hate buying/opening up RTV, because I usually only need a little dab! Last time I used it was for the valve cover gasket over the spot where the timing cover meets the head. I found a tiny packet at Orielly up at the counter, PERFECT!

Related Question:
If someone could 3D print an adapter, the intake for that debris filter for the HVAC system could be relocated closer to the right headlight and fitted with a HEPA filter.
Then, the air coming into the cabin would be clean HEPA filtered air.
The question is, are there other ways for air to get inside the cabin via the HVAC system?

That's clever, and very interesting idea. I'd be tempted just to seal off that opening, and cutting a hole somewhere else to bring filtered air into the cabin. I haven't really looked at the HVAC for these cars much.

I suppose you'd suck up a small amount of unfiltered air through the AC drain.

Filtering that little intake hole would not filter the system.

You're forgetting the long wide hole through the cowl underneath the windshield wiper grill. It's the hole through which you access some of the windshield wiper mechanism!

Preston III, thank you. That complicates the heck out of adding HEPA to the cabin intake air.

I made my own from some foam packaging and some mesh courtesy of alordofchaos...
