2000 SL2
Default Highest Mileage?

I went to the local supermarket earlier today to get some food, and when I came out, there was a '94 SW2 parked next to my car, and the owner was trying to start it. Only it wouldn't start.

I asked him if he needed any help, and he said sure. So we popped the hood, checked the oil because he was getting an oil light. Oil was a little low, but nothing to worry about. The engine bay was really dirty and worn, so I asked him how many miles he had on it, and, to my astonishment, he said '328,000 miles.'

Has anyone ever heard of a Saturn going higher than that? I remember someone's signature saying 320,000, and yet another person saying something about over 300,000. Dare I say it?.....How about *drum roll* 400,000 miles?

The car started after a while, by the way, but it smelled like it was running REALLY rich and burning oil, too. Wow. It was an auto, in case anyone wanted to know.

I wonder if it was the original engine.

500k miles? How many times was the engine rebuilt? What condition was the car in when you got it?

I have 212,000 on my 93 SC2 still the original clutch too. Had the main bearings checked and they said they looked brand new. Hopefully it still has another 212,000 left on it.

these cars with the high mileage are something, but it has to be a lot of highway miles which causes less wear. nine year old car averaging 36,000 miles a year. Thats a lot of driving.

Man mine only has 97,000 on it and it runs like a champ. Man that is a lot of miles to be on a car. But the saturn will live forever if you take care of it. You have to love the saturn. If you don't there is something wrong with you.

Come and check out my saturn at:

My 95 Sl2 is a tank with zero failures at 103,000 miles, but my 98 SL2 has had many minor problems every year. Since cruising these threads it seems the older S cars seemed more reliable. Does anyone concur?

ABSOLUTELY!My '93s bullet proof. My '97 I've had for just over a month has taken in:Coilpack/module assy,EGR,wires,PCV,plugs,ECTS,AIT,Torque axis mount.Granted some of the stuff I just wanted to do,but everything I removed and replaced on a hunch has been DUD and did require replacment!
The second gen cars are REAL sharp looking, but at a price. My '97 express down window switch just went this AM.My '93s switch is fine after all those years and miles.
Go figure!

Cool

I've had my 1993 SL2 for 10 1/2 years and 131,000 miles. The only things that have failed so far were the EGR valve, the upper radiator hose, the water pump, and an ABS sensor.

I was expecting those things to go and actually had ordered the EGR valve (and solenoid) and the two radiator hoses but hadn't gotten around to putting them in yet when the original ones failed. The water pump caught me off guard but based on its age I shouldn't have been surprised. When it failed I was thinking about replacing it and was debating between OEM Saturn water pumps and aftermarket ones from NAPA.

The other things that I've replaced were done either because the maintenance schedule called for them or because I wanted to do them - perhaps as performance upgrades.

My alternator is original, my clutch is original, the exhaust system is original, and the O2 sensor is original. Probably more but I can't remember them at the moment. All things considered my 1993 SL2 is the best car that I have ever owned in my 25 years of driving and car ownership experiences.

One of the other techs I work with recently had a '94 SC1 in for service. To our suprise this thing had 425k miles on it. It looked a little beat up, but heck... it ran great !!!
On the clutch issue, my '94 GMC V6 Sonoma still has the orig. clutch also, motor runs solid. Proof positive of frequent oil changes of 3k or less keep things going strong at 223k miles.
