Default S series junkyard autopsies/who says small cars are unsafe?

I sometimes see S series in local junkyards, and wonder why they are there.
Some were obviously totaled in accidents, but others seem completely intact, in fact, many of them seem more desirable, and in better condition than mine.
The main questions this thread hopes to answer is:
Why was this saturn scrapped?
If it was crashed, were the occupants okay?
And of course... What would it have taken to get it running?

3 main reasons for the S-Series to be in a JY: Didn't add oil soon enough; it has an automatic transmission or the manual trans has a hole in it.

From the photograph I hastily took of this one (dad is always in a hurry), I see nothing wrong with that SL2. It must have failed mechanically. At worst it needed an engine (that could come out of a wrecked S series)

What is everyones problem with automatic transmissions?
They work a lot better than any manual when I use them! (I will probably never be capable of driving a car with a manual trans...)

The fender has cracked, but I think that happened after it was junked. It most likely was sent here due to mechanical, but I could not investigate further, because dad was in a hurry. At worst, this sc needed another engine.

Again, this one does not seem to have crashed. We were in a hurry again, so I could not investigate the cause of death. (I would love it if dad just dropped me off at the junkyard for a day, that would be fun, and dad could do other things)

Some more intact saturns that I hastily shot photographs of as we rushed past.

This one was totaled. I do not think this vehicle was at fault. the cabin does not seem deformed, so I think the occupants were okay.

Someone hit the side of this car. The airbags went off. anyone in the passanger seat may have been hurt, but I think everyone lived. This seems to be the most dangerous type of car accident.

I think this SL2 backed into something, or something hit it, whatever it was, it was not going very fast. Is that really enough to total these? I would have tried to fix it.

My SW2 was once rammed in the driver's side by a VOLVO. The Volvo was totaled and had to be hauled away. My driver's door was smashed in along with the post with the hinges, and the windshield cracked, but I drove it home.
I had the post pulled out, the windshield replaced and fitted a door from a parts car I had.
Drives as good as new.

I will second that question.

To the O.P., small cars are perfectly safe IF larger vehickels look “down” and notice them.
I have yet to think of a way to increase the visibility of my Saturn, without (important) looking stpid so as to not get pecked-to-death like a tiny chicken with a dot of bright paint on top if it’s head

Hold the RPM's to about 3500 and quickly release the clutch while holding the shift lever in 1st does it pretty quick. Or you keep the tires spinning while migrating from dirt/gravel/ice/snow to bare pavement. Or you autocross with sticky tires.

At least from what I've been told, I never managed it myself. Had plenty of automatic transmission failures but never a manual.

The way I've driven mine, I'm amazed it hasn't shot it out yet... I'm always taking off hard, chirping the tires, taking turns fast. I drive it like the sports car it's not.. xD

What is wrong with automatic transmissions? I do not think any manual transmission would last 30 seconds if I tried to drive it... The only automatic I ever saw fail was on dads grand prix... shortly before the electrical issues that ended with a "nervous breakdown".

In the hands of experienced drivers, manual transmissions, even the ones in Saturns, can last hundreds of thousands of miles
