Wrench 2001 Saturn L300 - Battery Harnass Removal Problem + Left headlight Removal Issue

Hey everyone. As you might have seen I have been working on getting my car running on a different thread.

In the meantime I need to remove the battery to get it 100% charged up for proper testing and rule outs.

Unfortunately the screw/bolt is under the battery making it impossible to remove from an up and down position.

It seems the only way to remove it (and I already tried from under the car) ... absolutely nothing.

The left headlight (I was able to remove the far right 2 light bulbs and secured them away) however the one on the far left hand side... I cannot figure out how to get the bulb to unlock.

I looked at YouTube and found an example of a 2003 L300 and the owner removed the front panel / "grill" ; which I do not have... it's much different.

Which revealed unlocking tabs on each side of the headlight pack.

Does anyone know how to do this on the 2001 Saturn L300 so that I can put a wrench through where the headlights are sitting and remove my battery so I can get it charged?

Thank you in advance!

I had just changed our lights and you don't need to remove the grill or anything else. On-line shows a lever, but that was not there in our LS2. As I remember there are screws that allow the entire light module to slide and release from the car. Then you are able to replace bulbs easily.

I also sanded the plastic with 80 grit, then 220 grit and 600 grit and then I painted the lens with clear and they looked great. However, it was cold in the garage when I painted the clear and it cracked making it look like broken glass by morning.

Snapshots of the front end with the hood up to show upper cross member, headlights and battery?

The battery tray uses one hold down bolt on the bottom front of the battery, accessible only from the top. A long extension. socket and ratchet should easily fit between battery and upper cross member.

Haynes Manual states for battery removal....

1) Disconnect the connections

2) - Remove protective cover (if fitted)

3) - Remove the Fan Control Module. (In the Haynes manual there is an illustration, but the narrative is simple to follow " To disengage the fan control module from its mounting bracket, simply slide it up and off the bracket). This is a small black box in front of the battery and butting up against the cross member. It's located just by the hood stay bracket.

4) - Remove the hold down nuts and the hold down bracket. This hold down bracket appears to be underneath the fan control module. BUT check BOTH sides of the battery for hold down brackets.

5) - Lift out battery

There should be NO need to remove headlight assemblies, going under the wheel arch, etc, etc. It is a SIMPLE job to do.

The metal battery tray that you showed in one of your pics is normally painted black but usually ends up looking like yours with rust on it. When I did the transmission job on my son's 2003 L300, I had to remove the battery and the tray and a few more things as well. While the battery tray was visible and out, I cleaned it up and repainted it. You might want to do the same with yours while it's accessible.

floridasl22002,

That's very awesome of you to do work on your son's L300. Very good Father. Thank you for the tip. Do you think it's best to get it cleaned up using WD-40? Possibly some PB Buster?

Do I need to invest in sand paper?

Best Regards,

Brandon Kastning

You just need to scrape off whatever loose material there is on the battery tray. Then wire brush the rest, wipe off any dust with a rag and paint it with a couple of coats of black rust paint. You don't need to make the metal shiny. There are additives in the rust paint that react with the rust.
This is a good product:

imaddicted2u,

Thank you for this! Helpful information. It's a shame I just got rid of some black paint. Oh well. I will attempt the wire brush at some point!
