Default New clutch master-slave still fails wire test

What should I think if after replacing the clutch master-slave system the wire test still indicates the hydraulics aren't moving enough?

I replaced the whole assembly and thought I'd somehow broken the new since it still didn't measure right. But today, I installed a second brand new assembly and it's again giving the exact same short measurement. It should travel .43" (11mm) but is only traveling .31" (8mm).

Could the wire test indicate anything other than the hydraulics being bad?
Could it be a bent clutch fork, throwout bearing, the actual clutch or pressure plates..., other? My beginner logic says the wire test shouldn't be affected by these...

What could I be doing wrong? I'm pretty sure both master and slave cylinders are seated correctly and clutch pedal is not blocked...

Background situation: I drive a 2002 SL2 with 184,399 miles on it. Before this issue, gears would grind going into first if not fully stopped but was otherwise normal. I parked it after work and then the next time it wouldn't shift unless engine was off... My brother replaced the clutch when he purchased it two+ years ago.

Thank you: I'm new to Saturnfans and have learned so much reading through your different posts. A huge thank you to you all for sharing your accumulated experience!

I'm wondering if my firewall is damaged. Where the master cylinder locks in, it bulges out 3/8ths or 1/2 an inch when the clutch pedal is depressed. I wonder if that is normal?

I'll try bracing it and see what happens.

Well, bracing did not help. The wire test is still the same 8 mm.

I wonder if the clutch being bad could prevent the hydraulics from fully extending as they should. But seems if this were the case, I wouldn't be able to fully depress the clutch pedal. ???

I may pull the clutch and see if I can spot something wrong in there. I'm not keen on opening it up but I can't think of anything else to try (other than having it towed to a mechanic).

Can you get a camera in there somehow? I've also seen cheap ebay fake racing stage 5 BS clutches fall apart or have teeth bend too.
