2009 AURA XR
Default transmission kick/jerk when shifting out of park

Hey guys,

I have a 2009 Aura XR (2.4L 6 AT). When the car has been sitting for a while (like in the garage overnight) I will feel a kick/jerk when shifting it from park into reverse. This happens about 60-70% of the time, and is sometimes accompanied by a knock from somewhere in the engine bay. The car doesn't lunge forward or backward as far as I can tell since I have my foot on the brake.

I did recently had the transmission 'worked on'. I was leaking transmission fluid which turned out to be from the intake port on the radiator (the transmission fluid is cooled through the radiator). I was low and the mechanic replaced the fluid and the radiator.

I'm not leaking anymore but I am not sure what it could be. Thanks for reading.

Do you let the engine run for a minute or so before shifting out of park or do you just start the car and shift into reverse? The computer revs the RPMs up above 1,000 for the first minute or so to help the engine heat up a bit, so if you shift it out of park before they go back down to around 800, it's going to lurch because you're putting 1,000+ RPM of power into reverse.

If you don't already let the engine heat up for a minute or so after starting it, you should do that, not only to fix your problem, but because it's better for the engine.

It does seem to be better if I let the engine run for a bit before putting into reverse. This is a new symptom and I just wanted to make sure that there wasnt anything I should be doing to the car to fix it. I will let the RPMs drop to normal idle and see if that fixes my issue.

When didn't it exhibit this symptom?

The last time you had your transmission serviced was?
What did they do?
Ever change the fluid-drain and fill the transmission?

Mileage?

Original engine/transmission mounts?

1) Id say it started about 3 months ago
2) Early December 2015.
3 & 4) The only thing done to the transmission was he added the correct (or what he says is the correct) amount of fluid to it since it was leaking from the radiator. He said that the fluid was brown/burnt and replaced the fluid
5) slightly less than 95,000
6) yes I believe that all the mounts are original

I am beginning to think that the motor or transmission mounts are part of the problem. While at a stop, the car will vibrate (not violently or anything, just a constant low vibration) which has been happening for about a year now. I really don't want to dump more money into the car at this point, but I might look into replacing the motor and transmission mounts this spring.
