Default 2004 Saturn vue

Hey there. New to the forum. I recently picked up a 2004 base saturn vue for my sons first car. I picked it up in great condition for 2500 bucks. Only thing wrong with it was the ac doesn't work. Really don't care about that.

1. I replaced the battery just as a precaution so he wouldn't be stranded or anything. When I reconnected it i had all 3 check engine lights on, odometer didn't work, speedometer didn't work. ran only in safety mode. Disconnected it again the next morning and hooked it up. Ran fine for 3 weeks. Now the check engine light is on and has been on for a week. It drives fine and runs the entire time with nothing wrong. I am taking it to a dealer monday morning to check codes. I had them checked at autozone and it came up no codes.

2. I know the gas tank from what i read has a capacity of 16 gallons but i can only get 11 in before its full and the gauge reads full.

Any help with be appreciated.

What you are describing could be a failing BCM (body control module).

Did you get the 2004 Vue, 4 cyl engine with the automatic trans or the manual?

I have good news and I have bad news.

The good news: your current problems are likely not transmission related.

The bad news: the transmission in your 2004 Vue is a CVT (constant velocity trans) style which GM called the VTi (variable trans, intelligent).
These are very prone to failure and there really is no fix. Since Saturn is out of business and no longer makes replacement transmissions for these, your only future option is a junkyard transmission. But, since they are prone to failure do not expect that the junkyard version will be any better.
Yes, a vicious circle.

Well thats good news then. I only need this car to last until next September when we pay his moms car off. He will then get that and its a 08 nissan versa and runs rock solid.

You'll be lucky of it lasts that long. Especially in the hands of a young driver. Sorry for the bad news. BTW as for the gas gauge don't worry about it. When they get under a 1/4 tank they get wonky. I never had an issue with mine.
