Definitely the best car I've found so far on my search. But now I've read that 04 Cavaliers do this funny thing where the stepper motors in the instrument cluster start going haywire one by one, so I'll have to be prepared for that.

I heard good things about Saturns which is why I wanted one (they look pretty darn sleek too), but sadly just about all dealerships around my area selling anything under $8k are ripping people off.

I would still prefer a Saturn, but I highly doubt I'll find one with fewer than 75 - 100k miles, let alone 20k.

I'll keep posting on how my search goes. I'm looking at the Cavalier tomorrow. The absolute most I would pay for it would be something like $4500. No Cavalier is worth $8k.
I never thought I'd say this, but the manual windows are a dealbreaker for me.

The stepper motors going bad is a common issue that plagues a lot of other GM models too, but it doesn't happen often in Saturns though.

Any of the 2003-2005 Cavalier/Sunfire or all Saturn Ions (w/o CVT) should be good for at least 250K miles with good care & maintenance.

Okay, here's what I've got so far.

The 04 ion is out. Never stepping foot on that dealership again.

I found an 06 ion close by. Also automatic. It's 200 miles away from 100k. Guy wants $5100 for it.

Pros:
Cold AC
Smooth shifting
Drives great
Clean as can be
No accidents
Almost everything works perfectly
No pulling while braking
No leaks
No sunroof

Cons:
Dome light turns on and off by itself while in the on position
Power mirrors don't work
Pulls to the left slightly while driving. Only noticable at speeds over 60.
Steering wheel vibrates a bit. Also noticable when driving over 60.
Needs new front tires soon
Plastic dipstick tab looks dark in spots. Oil looks golden brown.

Mehs:
Tinted windows
3 owners
Left-front hazard blinker bulb is white, the other is orange.
Tiny paint scratch on the spoiler
Tiny spot of rust starting on the inside corners of the rear doors
Came from Canada (This is more of a Huh, as I'm not sure if this affects the vehicle at all)

This car search is exasperating. I hope this one looks more decent than the last. Haven't had a mechanic check it out yet as this car is about 45 miles away from me. Tell me what you think. Here's the listing:
southbend[dot]craigslist[dot]org/cto/4531725479[dot]html
VIN: 1G8AN15F06Z194052
Mfg. date: 03/06

Dome light seems like a common thing on gm cars. I leave mine in the off position.

You need to have the power mirrors and the front end checked. But they may not be a big deal. Also if it needs new front tires that may have something to do with the front end issues your having.

Golden brown oil isn't necessarily bad. It just needs to be changed.

The tinted windows look good. But if you don't like it have he tint removed.

Why does he car having three owners bother you?

The car is 8 years old. There are going to be minor paint flaws.

Finally... REALLy. The color of a marker light bulb can be changed for 2 bucks.

This car looks decent. With a decent price.

It was hard to find very many flaws with this car.

I'm gonna go for it. Offering $4250 initially. My target price is $4499. Wish me luck.

Is this an Ion 2 or an Ion 3? It looks like an Ion 2 with a white gauge cluster from an Ion 3 since it doesn't have the fog light button or alloy wheels (fog lights and alloy wheels are standard equipment on the Ion 3).

Your offer seems fair to me, but I'd be willing to pay a little bit more if they are willing to fix the problems that you found with the car

dome lights, could be either loose bulbs or issue with the switch.
power mirrors, could be the adjuster knob is bad, or the motors inside the mirrors. id replace the knob first bec i think those go out pretty common.
pulling to the left, get an alignment.
wheel shaking, a few things to check. check if the tie rod ends are loose, or if the wheels are loose. if those are good, you prolly need a balance.
worn tires, obvious solution there. them being worn could be due to the alignement.
spot on dipstick, get the oil changed. sometimes going by the color of the oil does not neccessarly mean you need new oil bec some manufactures make their oil dark, however, if you know what color the oil is when it enters the engine (like penzoil, has a light golden color, and gets darker as its getting broken down), then you can see the progression of the oil life.

as for the tinted windows, its usually good to have some tint. the darkness is ones personal opinion however.
having 3 owners is not bad, and from the condition of the ion, they have had some care into the car. mine, for example, im either the 3rd or 4th owner, bought it at 139k miles, and today reached 212k miles with no signs of engine problems.
the turn signal bulb, just get an amber one for like 3 bucks, or go LED like some of us have lol
finally, the paint, you can get touch up paint for around 5-7 bucks, and can cover up the spot on the spoiler. as for the rust, you may wanna get some sandpaper and rub it off where its back to metal, clean it really good getting the rust particals off, then use the touch up paint you get for the spoiler and cover the bare spot.

overall, i think you get a lot better buy than the previous ion, and for the price your going to try and offer, thats very reasonale considering all the minor TLC it needs. if the seller decide to get the bits and pieces fixed for you, then 4500-5000 would be fair

I would not pay 6k for that. Ive seen QCs next to floor room condition go for way less than that.
As much as I love these Ions, id lean towards the cavy too.
I try to avoid stealerships at all costs. They vacuum the car out, so its immediately worth an extra thousand.

I'm just a guy that enjoys my Ions.

Honestly I'd pass on that ion also. That is way too much . I've seen redlines going for that much in better shape

Officially the proud owner of a clean 06 ion 2, just under 100k.

Now to find out what to improve on. For starters I'd like to get some drilled and slotted rotors along with ceramic pads. The steering wheel shakes a tiny bit while at high speeds.

Here's to a happy, trouble-free 100,000 more miles!

congrats. there is a slew of mods that can be done. the performance rotors is a start. another useful mod is replacing the exhaust with a redline LJS exhaust.

of for maintenance, theres many ppl here for help. try searching for the issue you have to see if it has been mentioned before and/or solved

as for the shaking, thats more than likely wheel balance, but an alignment is also good to do
