Holy Schamoly.

You said control arms, I thought tie rods and other components. Chemo meds throwing me off, and my wife won't let me have coffee to help wake me up, convinced it hastens cancer growth. My oncologist calls BS, thank God. I will enjoy some surreptitiously after she leaves the house. In the mean time, the correct video is below.

I followed this when replacing mine. Harbor Freight sells a decent pickle fork for less than $15. That and a three pound hammer will make short work of releasing the old part. The pieces I put in had polyurethane bushings and were a real tough fit, I was hesitant to use the force necessary to bust them into place. My Samoan friend helping told me to take a break and get us a couple beers, come back in 15. After several minutes of unnatural noises and banging, I returned and he had the both of them in place. I don't think an arm with natural rubber bushings will behave the same.

That is an awesome series! Newly posted and similar to US spec Astras. Everyone should watch these.

Hi Nicolas_p,

Thank you. I'll do my best. Told my wife I'd be getting rid of my 3dr, but with all the parts you gave me, I might re-think that.

These videos show a guy with his own shop in the UK doing work on an Astra before "selling it on," a little Mike Brewer lingo there. This guy obviously has a conscious and wants to sell a safe and reliable product. His channel has him going through this car and completing repairs of all faults. If I saw these videos, it would make me want to buy this previously rusted and busted Astra H.

He goes into getting the subframe off, then the steering rack, then everything else. The biggest differences I remember are that we have the "electric" rack and the steering here is powered by a double sized pulley off the water pump......I guess I should look at the video again before saying that, but that is my memory, along with two different vendors of steering racks being used interchangeably on this type of Astra.

Have a coffee and enjoy, they are a bit long, but satisfying to watch. The others, too.

Almost gave up on the Astra after 12 years but thinking long and hard I decided to stay an Astra man. Still working on the first real mechanical issues (CEL light & oil cooler seal leak) but when these are resolved I hope to keep her going for another 10 years.

Like this fake GM gasket and seal kit on eBay for $13.98? Come on, are these things for real? OEM. I think not.

Rock Auto has the complete set, it appears, made by Dorman for about $40. I wonder if some or all are Viton brand? They are a big improvement over the standard neoprene ones. Viton is the brand that is recommended for high heat applications such as the push rod tube seals in the Corvair that I own.

I hope you are not accusing anyone of offering fake parts, with no evidence. I was just trying to help someone here in the community spirit, so not looking for any unsolicited vitriol.

The parts all have proper GM packaging and I see no indication that they might be otherwise. Given the amount of effort the oil cooler work takes, I chose OEM. No longer on offer.

Done.

Slow down. I had no intention of accusing you of buying, promoting or even selling anything that was not OEM or an authentic GM part. In your excellent and informative post you listed all of the individual GM parts numbers and the total cost of what is needed for an engine oil cooler replacement. My intention, lightheartedly enough, was to draw attention that for the price of this item on eBay, it cannot possibly be a genuine GM part that a person would actually be receiving. The price is just too cheap.

I am sure that you did buy genuine, quality parts for your vehicle. As you wrote, the job is too work intensive for you not to.

Maybe other Astra people out there don't know the difference between a so called GM part packaged to look that way and a fake part. It happened to me last month and I knew the difference but I bought the part anyways. It was a camshaft position sensor for $19.00. Also on eBay, it was pictured good. Yup, it really did look like a GM replacement, the part bagged, the proper part number on it, the GM logo and it read "made in Mexico". Long story short, the camshaft sensor failed within a week. I was quickly refunded my money and I then bought a real genuine GM camshaft sensor for $72. Like I mentioned earlier I knew it was a bogus item and I bought it anyways. Gee, $19 versus $72, what a deal! Anyways, nothing really lost on my part, get it, my part?

I do enjoy reading your posts AstraFasta and the way you always seem willing to help the Astra community.

Got it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Knowing that you just got burned by a fake clears things up. Thanks for the story and apologies once again for "jumping the gun".

We needed a bit of drama here anyways.

Update - after a ton of work we cleared the two CEL codes. The "Creampuff" just passed state inspection today. Good for two more lovely years of true Astra pleasure.

I got a fake valve cover gasket off ebay. Looked oem , sealed in plastic bag with GM logo, part number, hologram sticker (however from china). I didnt want to pay over $70 from the dealer so i ordered it from ebay for $12. Installed it and it failed in no time. Then off course picked up one from the dealer, removed the old one which already cracked and torn. Installed the dealer oem gasket and till date knock on wood, perfect.

So yes be careful out there! Good Luck !

128,500 miles and I'm starting to get real sick of all these CEL's recently. P0496, P2138, and the battery/security combo light on startup periodically. Feels like driving a BMW or something else German. I need to register in a new county next month which means passing emissions, but at this rate I'm not sure I'll be able to if I keep getting surprise codes.

Feeling pretty disappointed in the Astra lately, though I love how it drives on the Eibach/Bilstein B4 combo with 17x8 wheels and Conti DWS...like a German car, with all the electrical gremlins that come with it.

Nice "Fiata" you got there. Tell us how it drives & what you did with your Astra.

Savage Geese does harsh reviews, but he likes it.
