Default Reversed jumper cables! SMOKE

1995 Saturn SL2

So I had a friend give me a jump after leaving my lights on and we placed the cables on wrong on his car....(not clearly marked and he said he was sure...)

Smoke was coming from the belt side of the car but we could tell exactly form where.

Radio would not come on anymore and a day later the battery light started to be on.

Few days later my car died on the freeway and I had to pull over and get a jump (2) to get home...

Is the alternator dead? Is it possible that just a wire needs to be replaced? Where could the smoke have originated from exactly? Is a fuse at play here?

THANKS

The battery light being on is a strong indicator that the alternator is dead, but could just mean the fuse-able link between the starter and alternator fried (line goes battery->starter->alternator).

Hopefully the rest of the issue's are just blown fuse's, check the under-hood fuse box near the battery first then the interior one. No hidden fuse's like some cars have and they're clearly properly marked unlike junk Ford's. If you have a multimeter they're easy to check, just probe the test points on top of the fuse for connectivity (might work with a test light too, but I believe that'll just say there's power to/from the fuse not that each point is connected).
