1997 SL2
Default Just Registered, Wanted to say Hello! (1997 Saturn SL2 5-Speed)

Hello SaturnFans!

My brother (cgg17) suggested registering to SaturnFans and posting a few pictures of my Green 1997 Saturn Sl2.

My goal is to keep this car running until it goes into retirement. It currently has 177k on the odometer & I recently dumped around 1k into it this winter. (I redid most of the suspension, new tires, new panels, doorskins, trim pieces & threw on a warm air intake for a fun little upgrade over the standard airbox)

This summer I will be throwing more parts at it, mostly exterior. I will be uploading a bunch more pictures of my Saturn throughout the summer with any updates. Stay tuned!

For now I uploaded a few pictures of her for an introduction.

Thanks Everyone!

Default Re: Just Registered, Wanted to say Hello! (1997 Saturn SL2 5-Speed)

Welcome to the forums, and enjoy the car.

They are troopers, for sure. Definitely wish I had bought my 1995 SC2 at a much earlier point in my life. Either way, I am thankful for the one I have now.

How long they can last is directly proportional to the care provided and the oil level kept up.

Default Re: Just Registered, Wanted to say Hello! (1997 Saturn SL2 5-Speed)

Welcome!

Nice looking vehicle, can't imagine what exterior parts it needs.

If/when I start working on my SL2 again, the only things I am doing for the exterior are going to be LED lamps in the fog light position, and redoing the rear window tint (I got a wrinkle in one side from rushing, and wanted to go just a little darker)

The clear coat is peeling on the trim pieces above/around the doors, on the roof (getting bad) and the trunk. You cant really tell unless you are up close. I'll have to snap some shots of that. I replaced the entire trunk with another I found at the junkyard which came with a spoiler for around $60. (Spoiler not in picture) I'll get some new images of the car when the weather is nicer.

Next on my list is fog lights as well. I picked up the left hand side fog light/bracket recently, just waiting for a right hand side one to appear. I'm also going to need the interior buttons as well. I bet that will be the hardest part to find unfortunately.

Every time I fill up the gas tank I always check the oil. Doesn't seem to be burning much at this point in time surprisingly. My brother's 99' on the other hand goes through a bunch.

The interior buttons for the fog lamps will not be hard to source. Look for a 1995-1996 SC2, as they tend to have a higher frequency of factory fog lamps installed. Even a 1997-1998 SC2 should suffice. You may want the plug and harness to it, as your buttons(if you have rear defrost), will likely be lacking the wiring in the plug.

I replaced one of mine for the same reason. Looked nice for a while but a year or two later the clear coat on the new one started peeling, too

There a few decent write-ups for aftermarket fogs.

I liked this recent one but would use regular LED rather than halos

another with more info on wiring

There's also a good writeup somewhere here on DIY brackets. Wait, here's the link

Just got around to installing the fog lights this past weekend. You can see images at the thread labeled "Fog Lights - 1997 SL2". Still can't post links
