Renault and Nissan's board of directors REJECTED Penske's deal; basically in a phone call, saying that the deal was off. That is why Penske had to back out of the Saturn deal to buy Saturn from GM, he didn't have any other options. Besides..who REALLY would have wanted to have a Korean built rebadged Saturn? That would have gone against EVERY aspect of why Saturn was started in the first place...as a direct competitor to the Japanese imports.

Jill was with Saturn from the beginning, being named in 1986, a year after the carline was announced in January 1985.
I was just saying that he was interested in Saturn, and then after the deal didn't happen still got the person who was running Saturn. Just sorta a strange coincidence.

Ah. Sometimes it's hard to interpret online forum content, because the words can be taken in so many different contexts.

Don't forget Chevy's finally jumping into the fray with the Spark/Aveo. Yes, small cars are the future and here to stay, but there's not going to be a mass exodus away from the cute-ute or crossover unless fuel prices nationwide flirt with $5/gal levels again and remain there.

European style micro-compacts will never become a majority in the US. Sure there will be some but they are and forever will be a tiny percentage of cars on the road here and, as such, a mere novelty. Overseas the road width often dictates the size of the automobile. Roadways in their beautiful old cities were designed much thinner than the roads in America. The people there are forced to drive underpowered gasmizers because their neosocialist governments charge exhorbitant taxes on fuel, which is why their gasoline prices are so insanely high. The current regime in DC is he!!bent on following the Euro path, so we can expect a hike in gas taxes sometime soon. Fortunately, hard working Americans will not stand for that; even as more and more non-value-producing citizens demand that the government give them more and more money for nothing.

They will never become a majority in the US, but their numbers are increasing on the roads here as more Americans are leaning toards smaller cars for whatever reason they choose, and manufacturers are delivering...

Why do you refer to them as a novelty? This seems like the wonderful American mentality of driving more than you need coming through...

To some extent sure. But from what I see, it's not to super compacts like the Smart, or even the 3 door Yaris. It's to midsizes, compacts, or smaller SUVs. I don't think we'll see superminis become that popular here in the states, but something like the Mazda3 I think will be. It's roomy, useful, yet small and efficient.

That is of course, assuming we ever get out of this depression we're calling a recession and don't end up 3rd world pulling wooden carts behind starving mules.

I disagree. When done right, superminis can be very successful. The MINI brand has been far more successful in the U.S. than anyone, including BMW, ever imagined.

Yea but it's not a supermini. It's a Compact-ish, and they expanded their lineup to add that Clubman which is even bigger. The Mini isn't a whole lot smaller than the Rabbit. The Smart is tiny by comparison to any of those.

Plus, the Mini targeted a totally different group. It was for people who didn't need a large car(empty nesters and kids) and wanted something almost luxury, different, and sporty feeling. That's not at all the same group that goes for the Smart.

Luxury and sport aren't two words that I can recall ever being used to describe the Smart Fortwo. It's mostly a fashion statement except for people who are slammed for parking space. There are cars that are nearly as small, get similar mileage, cost less, but have much more usable interior space. Some people like the experience of owning something different and for those people, the Fortwo clearly strikes a chord.

Expect VW to hit this segment hard with the introduction (finally) of the Polo to the US market and the addition of Suzuki to their fold. They now own GM's former slice of the automaker and I expect Suzuki to be a wholly owned subsidiary in the not-so-distant future. That's the only real global threat to Toyota these days. Good times.

The Mini and the smart are pretty much competing for the same crowd in the US. There are quite a few Mini and smart households on the other forums I am on.

The average smart buyer has a median income of $70K. The car is well balanced (a car doesn't need 300 HP to be sporty... this is something that Americans seem to not get as a whole), and is on par with the Mini for luxury features (climate control, leather interior, heated seats, rain sensing wipers - the ride quality is similar to that of a Mini with the sport suspension).

What demographic do you think seems to go for the smart?

I respectfully disagree that small vehicles are a novelty. And surely they are not just limited to Smart fourTwos and 'shrinky-dink' rides from across either ocean. Sentras, Civics, Focus (Foci), Cobalts and Elantras are classified as compacts by the EPA. I suppose they and small crossovers like the Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, etc. don't count.

While respectful of your point of view, that last paragraph belongs OT. I do not care for the poltical leanings of the Obama administration any more than you do.
