Wrench Oil Light Flickers While Idling

My oil pressure light flickers when the car is idling at a stop light while in gear and sometimes even when in park. It is a 1999 SL1 with 183 000 kms on it....could it be my oil pump is going and is it ok to drive? Any info will be greatly appreciated....thanks.

When was the last time you had the oil changed?

You are low on oil, otherwise this light wouldn't flicker. I would check your oil level, and if it is low you need to top it off.

Your car may be starting to show signs of oil burning too.

Just my thoughts.

The pressure switch could be working on failing also. I think I would try a new switch.

What brand and weight oil are you using? They are not all the same.

Well, Its not known for going thin. But, you could try a synthetic blend as its called on the package. And just about any filter other than FRAM. If that does not solve it then, a new pressure switch.

As others have said, it might just be the oil pressure switch. They are cheap and easy to change. If that doesn't solve your problem, you need an oil pump.

Cheers,

oil pump could be worn out, or you might have a worn out bearing

Do you hear the valves clatter when the light comes on? That would indicate low oil pressure.

The easy thing to try is to replace the oil pressure switch as suggested by others. Check the connection to the oil pressure switch first, it might be corroded.

To test if the oil pump is going you need to hook up an oil pressure gauge. This is easily done while you have the oil pressure switch out as it gives you a convenient place to hook in to. Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive oil pressure tester. Got one and it works just fine.

Yes..the valves clatter at first when you start the car and the oil light is on then they get quiet once the oil reaches the valves....I bought a new sensor but can't get the old one off.....Lordco told me I need a special socket to remove it.....I will pick one up and get under the car once the snow has melted...thanks for the info...

Cheers

How long have you been hearing the valves clatter and the oil light on when you start the car? The oil pressure should pop right up after starting. I don't hear the valves clatter on any of my cars. The only lights I see on my cars are when they are tested when initially starting the car. Nothing beyond that.

You may have a bad oil filter. It couldn't hurt to change the oil and filter just to rule them out. What brand of oil filter are you using?

Do a search as there has been much discussion on filters on the forum. Fram filters fall toward the bottom. A bad oil filter can ruin your whole day along with your engine
