1998 SL2
Default Suggestions with vibration

I know, I know. Another vibration thread...
1998 SL2, auto, 170k miles.
I've had the car since May, and here's what I've done so far related (aside from standard preventative maintenance):

Changed plugs.
Changed all 4 mounts.
Previous owner replaced wires and coil packs in January.
Ran some injector cleaner with the gas.

What I have is a vibration at idle that bugs me. It's warm idle, in gear. I can see the headlights bounce on the car in front of me, and sometimes the door panel makes some chatter and something from the front end chatters (like plastic cover parts bumping). Otherwise, the car is smooth as silk, and the vibration smooths out if I shift to neutral. The only other notable thing is it misses just a little at idle in park without AC on, and it of course burns oil at a rate of 1 qt per 2000 miles - but neither really bother me.

Ideas? Tks, Scott

Run a compression test. If you have a low cylinder you will have a rough idle.

what speed is idling at(rpms)?
Does it have the brass ECTS?

Did you use platinum plugs?(you should not)

Test the resistance of each plug wire, or just replace them.

Good Luck!

Did you check for intake manifold gasket leaking (especially near cyl. 1)? Spray brake cleaner in that vicinity at idle. If you see, the idle speed change, you probably have a leak at the gasket.

Brass - Yes
Platinum plugs - no.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll check wires and intake gasket.

Platinum plugs are no good because of the waste spark ignition system used by the s-series. There have been members who's car would not start bc of these plugs. Switched to NGK and the car started no problem. Look for posts by Fdryer for a detailed explanation of the waste spark system.

OP: During idle, open the hood and watch your headlight rattle. Thats the noise your hearing. I used some hot glue to hold a piece of cardboard in place so the headlights would stop rattling. Worked well with no issues

Also, its highly unlikely you have a leaky gasket. That is more for SOHC third generation s-series.

Another thing to check is the EGR. A dirty EGR can cause a rough idle. Clean it using pictures of Wolfman as a guide.

Although RC1488 wrote it's highly unlikely, I agree with Amp67. Check your intake manifold gasket.

The symptoms you described are exactly what I observed with my 92 SL2. Vibrated at idle, (scan showed MAP and spark advance unstable), but smooth as soon as acceleration was applied. So if it is as you wrote - the engine is immediatly smooth upon acceleration - then continue to drive to your local auto parts store and p/u some carb cleaner in the spray can with the red tube to direct it over the intake manifold gasket area. Yes mine had broken and shrunk at number 1. It had covered about 1/2 of the intake port at number 1.

You can wait for the engine to cool down before restarting it and spraying it. Just a quick burst carefully aimed and the idle should really drop if there's a leak. It's by far the easiest, quickest, and one of the least costly diagnostics you can do before you go to all that trouble with plugs, wires and EGR.

Good luck to you!

True true! A bad intake manifold gasket has crossed generation along with crossing models (sohc - dohc). Though rare its a possibility.

And the EGR is 2 13mm bolts. Quite easy I daresay
