Cooling Fan How-To?

I need to replace the cooling fan on my 92 sl. I can't find a how-to. Is this a simple job? I think the fan motor is shot because the fan never comes on including when I turn on the AC. In fact, when I turn my AC on, the car wants to die. Also, if I sit idle, the car heats up quickly but cools down when I drive. The temp gauge has reached the red once in the past couple of days and I had coolant in my engine compartment so I think it boiled over in the coolant reservoir. Midas quoted $200 plus to replace the fan.

It is not a difficult job. Fan motors are available at various outlets such as Auto Zone, Advance for not a lot of money. If you have a 12 volt test light or an ohm meter, you may want to be sure you are getting power to the fan before you purchase and install a new one. You generally can not return electrical parts once installed. The fan wiring plugs into the fan motor. Unplug it, put either the test light or meter on the wires, (try both wires in the connector because I am not sure which color is going to be the hot wire), set up conditions that should have the fan on such as the air cond being on. If you have power, then you know. If you don't, then you need to start checking for other problems such as fuses, relays or wiring.

its very simple.
1. remove intake cross tube(thats not the right name i think)
2. unbolt, disconnect, and remove fan assembily.
3. unbolt the motor from the assembily(note there is one left threaded bolt clearly marked)

Thanks, I got the motor changed. It really was very simple. Most of my time was spent trying to remove the intake pipe and unclip all of the wires attached to the fan. I ended up taking out the battery so that I could get better access to the bolts holding the intake pipe. I won't know if my job was a complete success until this afternoon. I decided to change the ECTS at the same time but wanted to let my car cool down first. So right now my battery, intake pipe, and air filter case are all sitting on the floor of my garage waiting to be put back in as soon as I change the ECTS.
