Cooling fan

Is it normal for the cooling fan to turn on before right before its on the red?

We replaced the rad fan so it actually comes on now, but just seems a little high.

For your year car the fan and gauge are working as it was designed and there is nothing wrong.

That is the typical operation, temp gauge between 3/4 and red zone, but not into the red zone. Fan also comes on if the A/C is on. For 1996 and later models it comes on at a somewhat lower gauge reading.

For an early S Series car the described operation of the fan is perfectly normal. The fan comes on just before the red zone. It was redesigned in later cars so people would stop bringing their cars in needlessly with "overheating" concerns which in all reality was just normal operation.
