2003 ION-2 Sedan
Default 2003 sedan manual AC compressor replacement

Hi All.
I decided to replace my son's AC compressor, because the old one is leaking (NOT black death - if refilled it runs fine). So I decided NOT to replace the receiver/dryer as this is an extra $300. I'm pondering if I should replace the expansion valve. Any thoughts on that?

Service manuals recommends replacing the condenser coil with built-in drier and txv to ensure a new drier removes any minute moisture in a repaired system after a full evacuation. Replacing the txv is a matter of replacing a well worn part. Your choice.

Rockauto shows condenser coil/drier assemblies from $46-$167, thermal expansion valves from $10-$30.

Everything went well. I replaced evaporator and compressor in about 2 hours. Relatively easy repair. If you do it, make sure you take out alternator. It makes removal of the compressor much easier.
